India is currently experiencing one of the most intense heatwaves in recent years, with temperatures soaring above 47°C in several regions. As the scorching conditions test the resilience of millions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has issued a timely public appeal, urging citizens to adopt essential safety measures and extend compassion to fellow beings. His message emphasises personal responsibility, community support, and awareness to mitigate the risks associated with extreme heat.

PM Modi’s Appeal for Safety and Compassion
In a series of posts on X, Prime Minister Modi described the current weather as harsh and challenging for everyone. He stressed the importance of taking all possible precautions to safeguard health during this period. The Prime Minister particularly highlighted the vulnerability of children, the elderly, and outdoor workers, advising people not to ignore early signs of heat exhaustion, which can quickly progress to more serious conditions like heatstroke.
He encouraged citizens to remain well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water and carrying bottles when stepping outdoors. Modiji also appealed for small acts of kindness, such as offering water to those in need, noting that these gestures can make a meaningful difference in such trying conditions. Furthermore, he urged families to regularly check on elderly parents, grandparents, and loved ones, reminding them to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, rest adequately, and maintain hydration.
In a touching display of empathy, the Prime Minister called upon people to support birds and stray animals by placing bowls of water on balconies, terraces, and open spaces, helping them cope with the extreme temperatures.
Current Weather Conditions and IMD Outlook
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported heatwave to severe heatwave conditions across large parts of Northwest and Central India. States including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Odisha, Telangana, and coastal Andhra Pradesh have been significantly affected. Banda in Uttar Pradesh recorded one of the highest temperatures at around 47.4°C, while several other areas crossed the 45°C mark. Warm nights have provided little relief, adding to the discomfort and health risks.
According to the IMD, these intense conditions are likely to persist for the next few days in many regions before a gradual reduction in temperatures is expected from May 29 onwards, possibly aided by thunderstorms and rainfall in eastern and southern parts of the country. The department has advised people to avoid direct sun exposure between noon and 4 PM and to take adequate precautions.
Health and Broader Impacts
The ongoing heatwave has led to a noticeable increase in cases of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and related illnesses, putting additional pressure on healthcare facilities in affected states. High daytime and nighttime temperatures particularly affect outdoor labourers, senior citizens, and young children. Experts note that prolonged exposure can exacerbate existing health conditions, making timely intervention crucial.
Beyond human health, the extreme weather has triggered forest fires in some hilly regions and increased power demand as households and industries rely more on cooling systems. These developments highlight the wider challenges posed by such seasonal extremes across the country.
The MGMM Outlook
The severe heatwave sweeping across India has once again highlighted how extreme weather conditions are becoming a growing challenge for everyday life. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal focused not only on safety precautions but also on the importance of social responsibility during difficult times. His emphasis on hydration, checking on elderly family members, protecting outdoor workers, and even caring for birds and stray animals reflects the need for collective awareness in moments when vulnerable communities face the greatest risks. In situations like these, small acts of care can significantly reduce the human impact of such climatic extremes.
The rising temperatures across states such as Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha also expose the broader pressures heatwaves place on healthcare systems, electricity demand, and environmental stability. With temperatures crossing 47°C in some regions, the crisis underlines the importance of preparedness, public awareness campaigns, and stronger local support systems. The warnings issued by the India Meteorological Department serve as a reminder that adapting to extreme weather conditions is no longer optional, and sustained community cooperation will remain essential as India faces increasingly intense summer conditions in the years ahead.
