Political Row Intensifies in Punjab as BJP Seeks Legal Action Against CM Bhagwant Mann Over Blast Remarks

A fresh political controversy has emerged in Punjab following two low-intensity blasts near security installations, triggering strong reactions from opposition parties. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s remarks linking the incidents to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have led to demands for an FIR and a formal defamation notice against him. The development has heightened political tensions in the border state ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.

The Blast Incidents

The twin explosions took place on the night of May 6, 2026. The first low-intensity blast occurred around 8 PM outside the Border Security Force (BSF) Punjab Frontier Headquarters in Jalandhar. A second similar explosion was reported around 11 PM near the Army cantonment area in Khasa village, Amritsar. Fortunately, no major casualties or damage were reported in either incident. Security forces, forensic experts, bomb disposal squads, and dog teams were promptly deployed at both sites for investigation. These events followed an earlier attempted blast on a railway track in Rajpura, Patiala district, on April 27.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s Statement

Speaking during his Shukrana Yatra in Jalandhar and later in Anandpur Sahib, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann described the blasts as “minor” and suggested they were politically motivated. He claimed that such incidents were part of a pattern ahead of elections in the state. Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav, meanwhile, indicated that the blasts could be linked to external elements, possibly a proxy war by Pakistan’s ISI, timed with a specific anniversary. This assessment has been highlighted by several political leaders in their responses.

BJP’s Strong Rebuttal and Legal Steps

The BJP has firmly rejected the Chief Minister’s allegations, calling them baseless and inflammatory. On Thursday, a delegation led by Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar submitted a formal complaint at the office of the Director General of Police in Chandigarh, demanding the registration of an FIR against Bhagwant Mann. The party accused him of making statements that could hamper the ongoing investigation and disturb public peace.

In a parallel move, BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh issued a legal defamation notice to the Chief Minister. The notice urges Mann to withdraw his remarks, issue a public apology within seven days, and refrain from similar statements in the future. It warns of both criminal and civil proceedings if the demands are not met. Several senior BJP leaders, including Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu, have challenged Mann to substantiate his claims with evidence.

Broader Political and Security Context

The row has drawn reactions from other parties as well. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal criticised the law and order situation under the AAP government and demanded accountability. The incidents have once again brought the focus on security challenges in Punjab, a sensitive border state. Investigations into the blasts are continuing, with possibilities of involving central agencies like the National Investigation Agency (NIA) due to the national security angle.

The MGMM Outlook

The political controversy surrounding the recent low-intensity blasts in Punjab has intensified the already charged atmosphere in the state, with accusations and counter-accusations dominating public discourse instead of a united focus on security concerns. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s remarks linking the incidents to the BJP have triggered sharp backlash, prompting the BJP leadership to seek legal action and issue a defamation notice. At a time when security agencies are investigating possible external involvement, including suspected ISI-linked elements, political statements made without conclusive evidence risk diverting attention from the seriousness of the investigation and creating unnecessary public confusion. The incidents near sensitive security establishments in Jalandhar and Amritsar have once again highlighted Punjab’s vulnerability as a border state facing both internal and external threats.

The developments also reflect the deepening political polarisation in Punjab ahead of future electoral battles, where issues of national security and law and order are increasingly becoming subjects of political confrontation. Opposition parties, including the BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal, have accused the AAP government of failing to maintain stability and ensure public confidence, while demanding accountability and restraint in public statements. The ongoing probe, along with the possibility of central agencies stepping in, underlines the gravity of the matter. In such a sensitive environment, responsible leadership, transparent investigations, and a focus on maintaining peace and public trust remain essential for Punjab’s stability and long-term progress.
