Deepening Economic Ties with the United States

A highlight of the summit was Modiji’s bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump, marking their first in-person interaction in over 16 months. The two leaders reviewed substantial progress toward a bilateral trade agreement. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is expected to visit New Delhi soon to carry forward technical negotiations, supported by significant Indian investment commitments exceeding $20.5 billion in technology, manufacturing, and pharmaceuticals.

Modiji emphasised the importance of maintaining open and secure global shipping routes, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, in light of recent incidents affecting Indian nationals. Trump praised Modiji as a “tough negotiator” and a long-time friend, reaffirming strong US support for India on security matters and expressing his intention to visit India in the future.

Historic India-UK Free Trade Agreement

In a significant economic milestone, Modiji and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed the implementation of the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), set to take effect on July 15. This agreement represents one of the fastest rollouts of a UK trade deal in history. It will provide duty-free access for nearly 99 per cent of Indian exports to the UK while reducing tariffs on key British goods and enhancing technology exchange and mobility under the broader Vision 2035 framework.

Commitment to Peace in Ukraine Dialogue

During his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Modiji discussed opportunities for trade restoration and humanitarian assistance. He reiterated India’s consistent position of standing firmly on the side of peace, highlighting the critical role of dialogue and human security in resolving ongoing conflicts.

Resetting and Strengthening Relations with Canada

Modiji’s talks with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney focused on rebuilding and expanding bilateral cooperation. The leaders made notable headway toward concluding a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement by the end of 2026. Discussions also covered enhanced collaboration in energy resources, critical minerals, and the initiation of negotiations for a General Security of Information Agreement to boost defence intelligence sharing. Additionally, they announced the launch of the “Raisina Americas” platform to foster strategic ties across the Western Hemisphere.

Outreach to Global South and Indo-Pacific Partners

Beyond engagements with G7 members, Modiji held constructive meetings with leaders from key emerging and Indo-Pacific nations. Conversations with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan centred on ensuring secure commerce through the Strait of Hormuz, alongside an invitation to the upcoming BRICS Summit in India. Talks with Japanese leader Sanae Takaichi emphasised greater investment and technology collaboration, while meetings with Kenyan President William Ruto, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung addressed development priorities, security, agriculture, and resilient supply chains.

Further discussions with German Chancellor Merz highlighted the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties and progress toward deeper cooperation in trade, defence, green development, and an early India-EU FTA.

Addressing Emerging Global Challenges

In his broader interventions at the summit, Modiji drew attention to the risks associated with artificial intelligence misuse, such as deepfakes, cyber fraud, and misinformation. He called for coordinated international efforts to establish robust safeguards that protect institutional trust, children, and democratic processes worldwide.

The MGMM Outlook

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s engagements at the 52nd G7 Summit in France highlighted India’s expanding diplomatic influence and its ability to advance national priorities through strategic partnerships. His discussions with leaders from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Ukraine, and several Indo-Pacific nations focused on strengthening trade, investment, energy security, defence cooperation, and global governance. Key developments, including progress on the India-US trade framework and the implementation of the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, demonstrated India’s growing importance in shaping international economic and strategic agendas.

The summit also reflected India’s commitment to peace, resilient supply chains, and inclusive global development. Modiji’s interactions with leaders from the Global South and major economies reinforced cooperation in technology, critical minerals, agriculture, and sustainable growth, while his call for international safeguards against the misuse of artificial intelligence underscored India’s proactive approach to emerging challenges. These engagements further strengthened India’s role as a trusted partner capable of bridging developed nations and emerging economies in pursuit of long-term global stability and shared prosperity.
