PM Modi Highlights 12 Years of Garib Kalyan Initiatives: A Journey Towards Human Empowerment

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 8, 2026, commemorated 12 years of dedicated welfare initiatives under the vision of Garib Kalyan, describing them as a collective national movement focused on human empowerment and inclusive development. In a series of posts on X, the Prime Minister underscored the guiding principle of Antyodaya — the upliftment of the last person in society — which has driven efforts to restore dignity and ensure that the benefits of progress reach every section of the population, particularly those long marginalised.

"Over the last 12 years, India has witnessed many transformations and at the core of these changes is the welfare of the poor and downtrodden. We have always been inspired by Antyodaya and our effort has always been to ensure that the benefits of development reach those who were left behind for decades," PM Modi stated.

He further highlighted the role of technology in enhancing welfare delivery, noting that digital platforms and Direct Benefit Transfer have made support more transparent and efficient.

The Vision of Antyodaya and Garib Kalyan

The philosophy of Garib Kalyan places the welfare of the poorest at the heart of governance. Over the past 12 years, this approach has translated into a comprehensive set of interconnected schemes addressing financial inclusion, sanitation, housing, clean drinking water, healthcare, and food security. These initiatives have worked together to build resilience among vulnerable communities and promote sustainable empowerment.

Key Flagship Schemes and Their Reach

Central to this transformation has been the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), which has opened over 58 crore bank accounts, integrating millions into the formal financial system. Coupled with Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), it has ensured that government support reaches beneficiaries directly, reducing inefficiencies and strengthening trust in public service delivery.

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has led to the construction of over 12 crore household toilets, significantly improving public health and dignity across rural and urban areas. Meanwhile, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) has provided pucca houses to around 4 crore families, offering them secure and respectable living conditions.

Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, tap water connections have been extended to more than 15.8 crore rural households, bringing clean drinking water closer to millions and saving valuable time, especially for women. The Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY) scheme has provided health coverage of up to ₹5 lakh to approximately 55 crore beneficiaries, offering financial protection during medical emergencies.

A cornerstone of food security, the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) continues to provide free foodgrains to about 81 crore beneficiaries. Initially introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, the scheme has been extended till December 2028, reflecting a sustained commitment to nutritional support for the vulnerable.

Additional efforts, such as the Ujjwala Yojana for clean cooking fuel and Mudra loans for self-employment, have further strengthened economic inclusion and improved quality of life.

Measurable Progress and Broader Impact

These initiatives have contributed to notable outcomes in poverty alleviation and human development. Reports indicate that over 25 crore people have moved out of multidimensional poverty, with significant improvements in rural areas. The integration of technology through the JAM Trinity (Jan Dhan, Aadhaar, and Mobile) has played a pivotal role in enabling transparent and efficient governance.

During challenging times like the pandemic, these measures helped stabilise consumption and supported vulnerable households. The focus has extended beyond immediate relief to building long-term capabilities, aligning with the national aspiration of Viksit Bharat — a developed India where every citizen can participate meaningfully in progress.

The MGMM Outlook

The completion of 12 years of Garib Kalyan initiatives reflects a governance model that has consistently focused on extending the benefits of development to the most vulnerable sections of society. The emphasis on Antyodaya has translated into large-scale welfare interventions spanning financial inclusion, housing, sanitation, healthcare, clean drinking water, and food security. Schemes such as Jan Dhan Yojana, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission, and Ayushman Bharat have collectively contributed to improving living standards while ensuring greater dignity and access to essential services for millions of citizens.

A significant aspect of this transformation has been the integration of technology into welfare delivery through Direct Benefit Transfer and the JAM Trinity, which have enhanced transparency, reduced leakages, and strengthened trust in governance. The continued support provided through initiatives such as PMGKAY, Ujjwala Yojana, and Mudra loans demonstrates a broader commitment to both social protection and economic empowerment. The measurable progress in poverty reduction and the expansion of basic services indicate a sustained effort to create opportunities for inclusive growth while advancing the vision of a more empowered and self-reliant India.
