PM Modi Welcomes West Bengal’s Adoption of Ayushman Bharat: A New Chapter in Healthcare Access

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 12, 2026, expressed his happiness over the West Bengal government’s decision to implement the Centre’s flagship Ayushman Bharat (Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana or PM-JAY) scheme. In a post on X, he emphasised that the welfare of the people of West Bengal remains paramount and that the scheme would bring quality and affordable healthcare to millions in the state. He also highlighted the role of coordinated efforts between the Centre and the state in ensuring smooth delivery of key welfare programmes.

This announcement follows the first Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on May 11, 2026, where the new government approved the rollout of Ayushman Bharat along with several other central initiatives. Officials have been directed to finalise the necessary agreement with the Union Health Ministry at the earliest to enable swift implementation across the state.

Understanding Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY)

Launched on September 23, 2018, Ayushman Bharat is recognised as one of the world’s largest government-funded health assurance programmes. It provides cashless health coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary hospitalisation to eligible poor and vulnerable families. The scheme covers pre-existing conditions from day one, places no cap on family size, age, or gender, and offers nationwide portability, allowing beneficiaries to receive treatment anywhere in India.

As of early 2026, the programme has issued over 43.5 crore Ayushman cards, including special cards for senior citizens aged 70 and above. More than 36,000 hospitals — both public and private — have been empanelled nationwide. Since its inception, it has authorised over 11.69 crore hospital admissions worth more than ₹1.73 lakh crore, significantly reducing the financial burden of healthcare on families.

The scheme operates on a shared funding model between the Centre and states and aims to strengthen primary healthcare through Health and Wellness Centres while providing robust secondary and tertiary care support.

West Bengal’s Healthcare Landscape and the Policy Shift

West Bengal has long maintained a strong state-run health programme called Swasthya Sathi, which offers comprehensive coverage to a large section of the population. This initiative has been widely appreciated for its reach and has operated successfully alongside other welfare measures. The decision to implement Ayushman Bharat now reflects a commitment to expanding healthcare options and leveraging national resources for the benefit of residents.

The new government has assured that popular state schemes, including Swasthya Sathi and Lakshmir Bhandar, will continue without interruption. Efforts are underway to ensure a smooth transition, with possibilities of integration or parallel implementation to avoid any disruption in ongoing treatments. Private hospitals in the state are also preparing for the change, many of which are already familiar with empanelment processes under similar programmes.

This step aligns West Bengal with the national framework while building upon the state’s existing healthcare strengths. It is expected to improve access to advanced treatments, enhance hospital infrastructure utilisation, and provide greater financial protection to families facing high medical costs.

Looking Ahead: Opportunities and Benefits

The implementation of Ayushman Bharat in West Bengal is anticipated to bring several advantages. Millions of families will gain access to a wider network of empanelled hospitals across the country. Senior citizens and vulnerable groups are likely to benefit from expanded coverage options, including recent national enhancements. Improved coordination between central and state systems could also lead to better data management, faster reimbursements, and overall efficiency in healthcare delivery.

Health experts view this as an opportunity to create a more robust and inclusive system that combines the best features of both national and state-level initiatives. As the rollout progresses, focus will remain on seamless integration, awareness campaigns, and ensuring that every eligible beneficiary receives timely support.

The MGMM Outlook

West Bengal’s decision to implement Ayushman Bharat marks a significant step toward strengthening healthcare accessibility and expanding social welfare coverage in the state. By aligning with the Centre’s flagship health insurance programme while continuing established state initiatives like Swasthya Sathi, the government is creating a more inclusive healthcare framework that can deliver broader benefits to millions. This move reflects a pragmatic approach to governance, where collaboration between state and central institutions can directly improve public welfare.

The integration of Ayushman Bharat is expected to enhance access to advanced medical treatment, reduce out-of-pocket healthcare expenses, and provide stronger support to vulnerable families and senior citizens across West Bengal. With better hospital network access, improved infrastructure utilisation, and streamlined healthcare delivery, this policy shift has the potential to create a more resilient and efficient healthcare ecosystem, reinforcing the state’s commitment to affordable and quality medical care for all.
