Jewar Airport to Be Renamed Narendra Modi International Airport as UP Cabinet Approves Proposal
The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has approved a proposal to rename Noida International Airport at Jewar as Narendra Modi International Airport, Noida-Jewar. The decision was announced on October 9, 2026, following a Cabinet meeting in Lucknow.
According to Moneycontrol, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the Cabinet had approved the proposal, recognising Prime Minister Narendra Modi's contribution to the development of the airport. The proposed name marks a significant development in the identity of one of Uttar Pradesh's major infrastructure projects.
The formal implementation of the new name will depend on the completion of the applicable approval process. Once operationalised, the name is expected to become a prominent part of the airport's public identity.

Jewar Airport: A Major Milestone in India's Aviation Development
Located in Gautam Buddha Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh, near the Yamuna Expressway, Noida International Airport has been developed to strengthen air connectivity across the National Capital Region (NCR) and western Uttar Pradesh. The project is expected to complement Delhi's existing aviation infrastructure while providing additional capacity to meet the growing demand for air travel.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the airport's first phase on March 28, 2026. According to the Press Information Bureau, the first phase involved an investment of approximately ₹11,200 crore. The project is being developed through a public-private partnership involving Yamuna International Airport Private Limited, a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG.
The airport's strategic location is expected to improve access to domestic and international air travel for residents, businesses and visitors. It also forms part of the broader development of transport and economic infrastructure in the region.
Passenger Capacity and Modern Facilities
The first phase of the airport is designed to accommodate approximately 12 million passengers annually, with plans to expand capacity to around 70 million passengers per year through subsequent development phases. This long-term expansion potential could make Jewar an important aviation hub in northern India.
The facility includes modern runway infrastructure, passenger-handling facilities and plans for cargo operations. Its cargo infrastructure is intended to support the movement of goods, improve logistics efficiency and create better opportunities for businesses seeking access to domestic and international markets.
The airport's development could also encourage growth in aviation-related services, hospitality, warehousing and other commercial activities. As connectivity improves, the surrounding region may become more attractive for investment and employment generation.
Boost to Regional Connectivity and Economic Growth
The airport is expected to benefit several areas across western Uttar Pradesh and the wider NCR by improving access to air travel and supporting regional economic activity. Its proximity to the Yamuna Expressway provides an important road connection, while further transport integration will be essential to ensure convenient access for passengers.
Beyond passenger travel, the project has the potential to strengthen tourism, trade and logistics. Improved air connectivity can help businesses transport goods more efficiently, attract investment and support industries that depend on reliable domestic and international connections. The development of supporting infrastructure may also generate employment opportunities across aviation, hospitality, retail and related sectors. With further expansion, Jewar Airport could play an increasingly important role in India's aviation network while contributing to the economic development of Uttar Pradesh.
The MGMM Outlook
The proposed renaming of Jewar Airport as Narendra Modi International Airport, Noida-Jewar, reflects the significance of the project in India's expanding aviation infrastructure and the development of Uttar Pradesh. With modern facilities, growing passenger capacity and plans for future expansion, the airport is expected to strengthen connectivity across the National Capital Region and western Uttar Pradesh. The proposal also highlights the importance of infrastructure development in supporting India's long-term economic ambitions.
As the airport progresses towards its operational goals, its potential extends beyond air travel to trade, logistics, tourism and employment generation. Improved connectivity, combined with supporting transport infrastructure, can create new opportunities for businesses and local communities while attracting further investment to the region. The project represents an important step towards strengthening India's aviation network and advancing Uttar Pradesh's role in the country's economic growth.
