Defence Ministry Approves Pioneering 250 MW Solar Power Project with Battery Storage in Uttar Pradesh

In a significant step towards integrating renewable energy into defence infrastructure, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the development of a 250 MW solar power project integrated with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on vacant defence land in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh. This initiative represents the first large-scale renewable energy project of its kind undertaken by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) on defence-owned land.


The project will utilise approximately 850 acres of underutilised land at the former Sitapur Cantonment area. By repurposing this vacant land, the initiative aims to enhance energy security for defence establishments while promoting sustainability and long-term cost efficiency in power procurement.

Project Overview and Technical Features

The proposed facility features a 250 MW ground-mounted solar photovoltaic plant coupled with a substantial BESS component, reported to be around 50 MW/200 MWh capacity. This solar-plus-storage configuration will enable reliable power generation and supply, including during periods of low sunlight, thereby ensuring consistent energy availability for critical defence needs.


Such hybrid systems are particularly valuable as they mitigate the intermittency challenges associated with solar energy, providing a more stable and resilient power solution compared to traditional grid-dependent arrangements.


Strategic Significance for Defence and National Goals

This project underscores the Ministry of Defence’s commitment to optimising its vast land resources for productive and sustainable uses. The MoD manages extensive land holdings across the country, and identifying surplus or vacant parcels for renewable energy development allows for better asset utilisation without affecting operational requirements.


The initiative aligns with India’s broader national objectives of expanding renewable energy capacity, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, and achieving environmental sustainability targets. State-owned NTPC Limited, through its renewable energy arm, has been entrusted with executing the project via a competitive bidding process. This method is intended to ensure cost-effectiveness, transparency, and the selection of optimal technology and pricing.


Close coordination is planned among the Ministry of Defence, NTPC, the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Army), and the Directorate General Defence Estates (DGDE). This collaborative approach is designed to facilitate smooth implementation and timely completion of the project.
