India Strengthens Telecom Cybersecurity to Counter AI-Powered Cyber Attacks
India is stepping up efforts to protect its telecommunications infrastructure as artificial intelligence (AI) creates new cybersecurity challenges. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is working with major telecom operators, including Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and BSNL, to strengthen security systems and prevent increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks.
According to a Business Standard report published on November 6, 2026, several rounds of discussions have taken place between the government and telecom companies to review existing security arrangements and identify potential vulnerabilities. Operators are working on strengthening firewalls and other protective mechanisms to prevent unauthorised access and safeguard critical networks. The initiative also involves other strategic infrastructure providers, highlighting the importance of protecting essential digital services.

AI-Powered Threats Raise Security Concerns
The growing use of autonomous AI agents has introduced new risks to cybersecurity. These advanced tools can independently examine digital systems, identify software weaknesses and potentially exploit vulnerabilities with limited human involvement. Such capabilities could allow cybercriminals to conduct attacks more quickly and on a larger scale.
India's cybersecurity agency, CERT-In, has highlighted the misuse of AI tools for reconnaissance, vulnerability exploitation and unauthorised access to organisational systems. These threats are particularly concerning because telecom networks support essential services such as banking, digital payments, government platforms and business communications. Protecting these networks is therefore important for maintaining the reliability of India's expanding digital economy.
CERT-In Introduces AI Security Guidelines
To address emerging risks, CERT-In introduced its Artificial Intelligence Security Auditing Guidelines on November 4, 2026. The framework focuses on assessing AI systems based on their potential risks and establishing stronger security practices across government and private organisations.
The guidelines emphasise independent security audits, continuous monitoring, human supervision and timely reporting of cybersecurity incidents. These measures aim to ensure that AI technologies are deployed responsibly while reducing the possibility of security failures and unauthorised access.
India Advances AI-Based Cyber Defence
India is also exploring advanced artificial intelligence capabilities to strengthen its cybersecurity preparedness. Reports indicate that CERT-In has gained access to Anthropic's Mythos AI model, which can help identify software vulnerabilities and support security research.
Meanwhile, TRAI has proposed a framework for the responsible use of AI in telecommunications. Its recommendations focus on risk assessment, accountability, human oversight and monitoring of AI-based systems used by telecom operators. Together, these initiatives aim to encourage technological innovation while maintaining stronger safeguards for critical networks.
The MGMM Outlook
India’s efforts to strengthen telecommunications cybersecurity reflect its growing commitment to protecting critical digital infrastructure against emerging AI-powered threats. The Department of Telecommunications is working closely with major telecom operators, including Jio, Airtel, Vodafone Idea and BSNL, to strengthen network security, improve firewalls and prevent unauthorised access. With AI-powered tools becoming increasingly capable of identifying and exploiting software vulnerabilities, initiatives by CERT-In, including its new AI Security Auditing Guidelines, are an important step towards building a stronger and more resilient cybersecurity framework.
India’s approach combines technological advancement with stronger security regulations and cooperation between government agencies and private telecom companies. Measures such as independent security audits, continuous monitoring, human supervision and responsible AI deployment can help safeguard essential services, including digital payments, banking and government platforms. As India advances its digital economy and expands AI adoption, strengthening cybersecurity capabilities will be crucial to protecting national digital assets, maintaining public trust and establishing India as a secure and technologically capable digital nation.
