Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 7 completed 25 uninterrupted years at the helm of a government, marking a political journey that began with his first term as Gujarat Chief Minister in 2001 and continued with his tenure as Prime Minister from 2014. At a programme in New Delhi, Modiji used the milestone to look beyond his political journey and present a renewed national call for confidence, ambition and collective effort.

The central message of his address was “We will do it”, a phrase he repeatedly used while outlining India's future goals. The Prime Minister linked the message with the broader objective of building a developed India by 2047, when the country will celebrate 100 years of independence.

From Gujarat to 25 Years at the Helm

Modiji's journey as the head of a government began on October 7, 2001, when he took oath as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. After more than 12 years in the state, he moved to national politics and became Prime Minister in 2014. He subsequently secured mandates in 2019 and 2024, beginning his third consecutive term as Prime Minister in 2024.

Reflecting on the journey, Modiji said the 25-year milestone was not simply a personal achievement. He credited the people, workers and supporters who had accompanied him through different stages of public life. He also described the experiences of the past quarter-century as a source of learning that could contribute to India's next phase of development.

“We Will Do It”: A Call for Greater Confidence

The phrase “We will do it” became the defining message of the Prime Minister's address. Rather than treating the anniversary only as an occasion to look back, Modiji presented it as a moment to renew India's national resolve.

He said India should not settle for small or easy objectives and argued that the country's size, talent and potential demanded bigger ambitions. The audience repeatedly responded to his call of “We will do it”, turning the phrase into a central theme of the event.

The message comes within the larger Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, which seeks to position India as a developed, self-reliant and globally competitive nation by the centenary of independence.

Five Major Goals for India's Future

Alongside the developed-India objective, Modiji highlighted five major ambitions: making India one of the world's top three economies, building an Atmanirbhar Bharat, turning the country into a global manufacturing hub, hosting the Olympic Games and expanding India's capabilities in human spaceflight.

These goals bring together economic growth, industrial capacity, technological advancement and India's aspirations on the global stage. The manufacturing objective, in particular, is closely connected with efforts to increase domestic production and strengthen India's position in global supply chains.

The Production Linked Incentive scheme has been one of the important policy measures supporting this broader manufacturing push. Launched in 2020, the scheme provides incentives to encourage investment and production across selected sectors.

From Resilience to New Economic Ambitions

During his address, Modiji also highlighted India's ability to navigate major global disruptions, including the Covid-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions that affected supply chains and energy markets.

He contrasted the country's earlier economic vulnerabilities with what he described as greater resilience and confidence today. According to the Prime Minister, India's objective should now move beyond managing challenges towards building stronger domestic production, increasing exports and developing capabilities in strategically important sectors.

The emphasis on manufacturing and self-reliance also reflects the government's broader focus on sectors such as electronics, defence, semiconductors and advanced technology. These areas are increasingly being viewed as important to India's long-term economic and strategic strength.

Governance Experience and a Long-Term Vision

The Union Cabinet also marked the milestone on October 6 by adopting a resolution congratulating Modiji on completing 25 years of continuous leadership as head of government. The resolution highlighted initiatives associated with his Gujarat tenure, including SWAGAT and Jyotigram, as well as national programmes relating to financial inclusion, welfare delivery, infrastructure and technological development.

The government's broader assessment also pointed to developments in digital public infrastructure, manufacturing, scientific research and space technology. The achievements cited included India's Covid-19 vaccine development and the Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission, alongside initiatives aimed at strengthening India's economic and technological capabilities.

The Road to Viksit Bharat 2047

The significance of the 25-year milestone lies not only in the length of Modiji's tenure but also in the long-term goals being placed before the country. The 2047 deadline gives India a two-decade horizon to pursue structural economic transformation and strengthen its position across manufacturing, technology, infrastructure and innovation.

The Prime Minister's emphasis on a top-three economy, global manufacturing leadership, self-reliance and advanced space capabilities reflects an attempt to frame India's development as a broad national mission rather than a series of short-term targets.

With the next two decades likely to bring major changes in technology, global trade and geopolitics, India's ability to translate these ambitions into sustained growth, employment and greater global competitiveness will remain central to the Viksit Bharat agenda.

The MGMM Outlook

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s completion of 25 years at the helm of a government marks a significant milestone, spanning his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister from 2001 and his continued leadership as Prime Minister since 2014. The occasion has been used not merely to reflect on the journey so far, but to set a forward-looking national agenda centred on the message “We will do it.” The emphasis on confidence, self-reliance, manufacturing, technology and economic strength reflects an ambition to move India towards becoming a developed nation by 2047.

The five major goals outlined—becoming one of the world’s top three economies, building an Atmanirbhar Bharat, establishing India as a global manufacturing hub, hosting the Olympics and expanding human spaceflight capabilities—highlight the scale of the vision for the coming decades. Achieving these objectives will require sustained investment, innovation, infrastructure development and collective participation across sectors. The 25-year milestone therefore becomes a point to look ahead, with Viksit Bharat 2047 providing a long-term framework for strengthening India’s economic and technological capabilities and expanding its role on the global stage.
