PM Modi Likely to Visit US for G20 Summit in Florida in December
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to travel to the United States in December to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Miami, Florida, scheduled for December 14–15. Although New Delhi has not formally announced the Prime Minister’s travel plans, preparations are reportedly underway for his participation. A possible bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump is also expected to be an important part of the visit.
The summit will bring together leaders of major economies at a time when international trade, energy security, technology and supply-chain resilience remain important global issues. For India, the gathering will provide an opportunity to engage with major economic partners and discuss areas of mutual interest.

Modi-Trump Meeting Could Focus on Trade and Strategic Cooperation
If Prime Minister Modi travels to Florida, talks with President Trump are expected to cover the broader India-US relationship, particularly trade, defence, energy and technology. The two leaders last met on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France, in June, where these areas were among the subjects discussed.
Trade is likely to receive particular attention as India and the US continue negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has said the two countries have made significant progress in their discussions. Bilateral trade is currently estimated at around $240 billion, while both sides have previously expressed an ambition to increase it to $500 billion over the coming years.
Trade Talks Continue Amid Tariff and Energy Issues
The proposed meeting comes as India and the US continue to work through differences over tariffs and India’s energy purchases. Washington has proposed additional measures linked to countries purchasing Russian oil, creating another issue for ongoing trade discussions. India has maintained that its energy policy is guided by national energy-security requirements.
At the same time, India has been diversifying its sources of crude oil. Reuters reported that Indian imports of Russian oil declined in August, while purchases from countries including Iraq, the UAE and Saudi Arabia have also featured in the changing supply mix.
Beyond tariffs, the two countries have been expanding cooperation in areas such as critical minerals, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, defence and emerging technologies. These sectors are increasingly important to the economic and strategic relationship between the two countries.
Quad Cooperation May Add Another Dimension
The December gathering could also provide an opportunity for a meeting of the Quad leaders, comprising India, the United States, Japan and Australia. The four countries cooperate on issues including maritime security, critical and emerging technologies, cybersecurity, infrastructure, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
US Ambassador Sergio Gor has previously indicated that Washington is interested in bringing the four leaders together for a summit. A meeting on the sidelines of the G20 would therefore provide an additional platform for discussions on Indo-Pacific cooperation and emerging strategic challenges.
Canada Visit Could Expand December Diplomacy
Prime Minister Modi’s possible US visit could also form part of a wider North American diplomatic engagement. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said he expects to host Modiji in Canada around the same period, as the two countries make progress on negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
India and Canada are exploring greater cooperation in trade, energy, critical minerals and other economic sectors. The potential visit would therefore add another important economic engagement to Modiji’s December schedule if the plans are confirmed.
G20 Summit Offers Platform for Global Economic Discussions
The 2026 G20 Summit will take place against a backdrop of changing global trade patterns, energy concerns and rapid technological development. India’s participation would give it an opportunity to engage with major economies on issues affecting global growth and international economic cooperation.
For India and the US, the summit could also provide a setting to continue discussions on trade while expanding cooperation in technology, defence, energy and critical supply chains.
The MGMM Outlook
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s expected visit to the US for the December G20 Summit could provide an important platform for India to engage with major global economies. Discussions with US President Donald Trump may focus on trade, defence, energy, technology and critical supply chains, while continued cooperation in semiconductors, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies could further strengthen bilateral ties.
The summit may also create opportunities for wider Indo-Pacific cooperation through a possible Quad leaders’ meeting involving India, the US, Japan and Australia. With India also exploring deeper economic engagement with Canada in areas such as trade, energy and critical minerals, the December diplomatic engagements could further expand India’s partnerships and strengthen its role in global economic and strategic discussions.
