India has completed 12 years of the Make in India initiative, a landmark programme launched on 25 September 2014 to strengthen domestic manufacturing, attract global investment, generate employment, and position the country as a leading global production hub. Marking the occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the initiative has become a symbol of India's growing industrial confidence, emphasizing the vision of “More Made in India, More Investment, More Exports.”

Over the past decade, the campaign has evolved into a broad economic strategy that combines manufacturing, innovation, infrastructure development, and export competitiveness. Today, products designed and manufactured in India are reaching markets across the world, reflecting the country's expanding role in global supply chains.

Building a stronger manufacturing ecosystem

Make in India was introduced with the objective of encouraging companies to manufacture within the country while improving the ease of doing business. The initiative identified key sectors including automobiles, electronics, defence, pharmaceuticals, textiles, railways, renewable energy, and food processing as engines of industrial growth.

Government reforms over the years have simplified investment procedures, expanded industrial infrastructure, and encouraged both domestic and international businesses to establish manufacturing facilities in India. Industrial corridors, logistics improvements, and digital governance have further strengthened the country's manufacturing ecosystem, making India an increasingly attractive destination for long-term investment.

Record investments strengthen economic growth

The growth of India's manufacturing sector has been supported by rising investment and increasing investor confidence. According to official data highlighted during the anniversary celebrations, India has witnessed record levels of foreign direct investment over the past decade, with cumulative FDI inflows reaching hundreds of billions of dollars since the launch of Make in India.

These investments have contributed to the expansion of industrial parks, smart manufacturing zones, and new production facilities across multiple states. The focus on creating a stable and competitive business environment has helped strengthen India's position as one of the world's fastest-growing major economies.

PLI schemes drive production and exports

A significant boost to the Make in India mission has come through the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes. Introduced across strategic sectors such as electronics, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, telecom equipment, solar modules, and medical devices, the programme rewards companies for increasing domestic production and expanding exports.

The PLI initiative has attracted substantial investments, increased manufacturing output, and supported the creation of millions of employment opportunities. It has also played an important role in reducing import dependence while enabling Indian manufacturers to compete more effectively in international markets.

Electronics and defence lead the next chapter

Among the biggest success stories of the past twelve years is India's rapidly growing electronics industry. The country has emerged as one of the world's largest smartphone manufacturing destinations, with global companies expanding production facilities and increasing exports from India. This growth has strengthened the country's reputation as a reliable technology manufacturing hub.

Defence manufacturing has also witnessed remarkable progress through greater indigenous production and increased participation of Indian industries. The emphasis on self-reliance in strategic sectors has enhanced domestic capabilities while opening new opportunities for innovation, research, and advanced manufacturing.

A vision for the future

As India enters the next phase of its manufacturing journey, the emphasis remains on creating high-quality jobs, encouraging innovation, expanding exports, and integrating Indian industries with global value chains. The Prime Minister noted that stronger trade partnerships and continued industrial reforms will provide greater opportunities for entrepreneurs, startups, and young professionals to contribute to the nation's economic growth.

With sustained investment in infrastructure, technology, skilled workforce development, and manufacturing excellence, Make in India continues to serve as a key pillar in India's long-term vision of becoming a globally competitive industrial and economic powerhouse.

The MGMM Outlook

Twelve years of Make in India reflect India's steady transformation into a stronger manufacturing and industrial economy. By encouraging domestic production, improving infrastructure, attracting investment, and expanding opportunities across sectors such as electronics, defence, pharmaceuticals, and renewable energy, the initiative has strengthened India's position in global supply chains while creating greater employment and industrial growth.

The continued emphasis on innovation, self-reliance, and export-led development highlights India's long-term vision of becoming a globally competitive manufacturing powerhouse. With rising investments, expanding production capabilities, and growing international demand for Indian-made products, the country is building a resilient economic foundation that supports entrepreneurs, skilled workers, and future generations.
