BJP Leaders and State Governments Embrace Austerity Measures Following PM Modi's Call for Fuel Conservation

In a significant show of collective responsibility, several BJP-ruled states and senior leaders have promptly implemented practical steps to promote fuel conservation and reduce government expenditure. This follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal urging citizens and officials to adopt austerity practices amid global energy uncertainties arising from the West Asia situation.

The Prime Minister himself set a strong example by directing a nearly 50% reduction in the size of his official convoy while emphasising greater use of electric vehicles without new purchases. His appeal encouraged reviving practices from the COVID-19 period, such as work-from-home arrangements, virtual meetings, carpooling, and increased reliance on public transport like metro services.

Leading by Example at the National Level

Union ministers have responded enthusiastically to the call. Several, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Health Minister JP Nadda, have reduced the number of vehicles in their official convoys, balancing essential security needs with the goal of fuel efficiency. These measures reflect a broader commitment to prudent resource management and setting a positive precedent for governance.

Uttar Pradesh: Comprehensive Fuel-Saving Initiatives

Uttar Pradesh has taken one of the most proactive approaches under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. He has ordered an immediate 50% reduction in official vehicle fleets for himself, his ministers, and senior officials. The state is also encouraging elected representatives to use public transport at least one day a week, alongside promoting carpooling, cycling, staggered office timings, virtual meetings, and work-from-home options to ease peak-hour traffic and fuel consumption.

The Chief Minister has further appealed to residents to minimise unnecessary use of petrol and diesel while exercising restraint on non-essential gold purchases, aiming to support the nation's foreign exchange reserves.

Madhya Pradesh: Focus on Simplicity and Minimal Convoys

In Madhya Pradesh, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has reduced his personal convoy from 13 to 8 vehicles and instructed ministers to follow a similar path of minimalism. He has emphasised avoiding unnecessary vehicles and large political rallies during official tours, encouraging simplicity in travel and greater use of public transport. These steps highlight a dedication to leading by example in resource conservation.

Initiatives Across Other States

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma has directed officials to eliminate unnecessary vehicles for routine and security duties. In Maharashtra, the government has introduced strict protocols requiring prior approval from the Chief Minister’s Office for non-essential air travel using government aircraft. Several MLAs have already begun opting for train journeys for official work.

Gujarat’s Governor has committed to using trains and buses for intra-state travel instead of air or helicopter options, while Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi cancelled a planned international visit. In Bihar, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary has personally halved his fleet and restricted official travel to only essential trips. Delhi BJP leaders have also promoted minimal vehicle usage and carpooling among ministers, MLAs, and officials.
