Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with Sweden’s highest civilian honour for a foreign head of government — the Royal Order of the Polar Star, Degree Commander Grand Cross — during his official visit to Gothenburg on May 17, 2026. This prestigious recognition marks his 31st international honour and highlights the growing warmth and strategic depth in bilateral relations between India and Sweden.

Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden presented the award to Prime Minister Modi in a special ceremony at the County Governor’s residence, in the presence of Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. The conferment, approved by King Carl XVI Gustaf, acknowledges Modi’s exceptional contributions to fostering India-Sweden ties and his leadership in promoting global cooperation.

Historical Significance of the Award

The Royal Order of the Polar Star, established in 1748, is one of Sweden’s oldest and most esteemed orders. It is traditionally awarded for distinguished service in public activities, science, literature, and efforts that strengthen international goodwill with Sweden. The Commander Grand Cross represents the highest grade within this order, usually reserved for heads of state and government who have made outstanding contributions.

Prime Minister Modi is noted as the first Asian leader to receive this honour in this category. In his gracious acceptance, he dedicated the award to the 1.4 billion people of India and to the enduring friendship between the two nations. He described it as a reaffirmation of the historic and civilizational bonds that unite India and Sweden.

Deepening Strategic Cooperation

This honour comes at a pivotal moment during the third leg of Prime Minister Modi’s five-nation tour. India and Sweden have agreed to elevate their bilateral relationship to a full Strategic Partnership, backed by a comprehensive Joint Action Plan for 2026-2030. The two countries are focusing on key areas including trade and investment, defence and security, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, clean energy, green technology, innovation, and startups.

Bilateral trade has reached approximately $7.75 billion, supported by strong Swedish investments in India exceeding $2.8 billion in recent years. Collaborations in defence, particularly involving Saab’s manufacturing projects in India, along with advancements in sustainable technologies, reflect the robust and forward-looking nature of the partnership. Prime Minister Modi’s arrival in Gothenburg was marked by a ceremonial welcome, including an escort by Swedish Gripen fighter jets, symbolising the close defence and technological synergy.

Discussions between the two prime ministers also touched upon broader regional and global issues, including progress towards an India-EU Free Trade Agreement and shared commitments to counter-terrorism and climate action.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Sweden builds upon the foundation laid during his earlier engagement in 2018 at the India-Nordic Summit. Gothenburg, recognised as a hub of Swedish industry and innovation, provided the perfect setting for high-level meetings with business leaders and policymakers.
