The Grand Beginning of the Yatra

The pilgrimage officially commenced from the twin base camps at Nunwan in Pahalgam (Anantnag district) and Baltal in Sonamarg (Ganderbal district). Batches of pilgrims, including men, women, and sadhus, set off at dawn amid chants of Bum Bum Bhole, Har Har Mahadev, and Jai Barfani Baba Ki. On Thursday, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha flagged off the first major group of pilgrims from Jammu’s Bhagwati Nagar base camp, marking a spiritually charged start to the 57-day journey that will conclude on August 28.

Devotees received a warm welcome upon reaching the Kashmir Valley, with the administration and locals extending hospitality and support. Elaborate arrangements, including multi-layered security, enhanced medical facilities, weather monitoring, and logistical support, have been put in place to ensure the safety and comfort of all participants. Over 3.9 lakh devotees have registered for this year’s Yatra, reflecting the deep faith that continues to draw lakhs of people to this sacred site.

The Timeless Spiritual Significance of Amarnath

Nestled at an altitude of approximately 3,880 metres, the Amarnath Cave houses a naturally formed ice stalagmite revered as the Swayambhu Lingam of Lord Shiva. Accompanied by smaller ice formations symbolising Parvati and Ganesha, the Lingam waxes and wanes with the lunar phases, reaching its majestic peak during the month of Shravan. According to ancient legends, Lord Shiva chose this cave to reveal the secret of immortality to Goddess Parvati, making it a profound symbol of eternity, divine grace, and the eternal cycle of life.
