Impact of Climate Change on Vulnerable Nations

Prime Minister Modi drew attention to the harsh realities of climate change, particularly its disproportionate effects on the Global South and small island nations. He observed that the consequences are already manifesting along coastlines, within marine ecosystems, through shifting weather patterns, and in the daily lives of communities. Island nations like Seychelles, which contribute minimally to global emissions, often face the most severe impacts, including rising sea levels and threats to biodiversity.

Modiji stressed that climate action must be rooted in fairness, responsibility, and equity. He firmly stated that countries which have contributed the least to climate change should not bear the greatest burden of its effects. This message resonated strongly with the audience, underscoring the need for a just global framework that supports vulnerable nations in building resilience.

A Shared Vision for Inclusive Development

Throughout his address, the Prime Minister highlighted the common approach to development shared by India and Seychelles. Both nations are united by a commitment to inclusive progress and the advancement of Global South priorities on the international stage. Modiji expressed confidence that the two countries would continue to collaborate closely to promote sustainable and equitable growth for the benefit of the wider region.

He also dedicated Seychelles’ prestigious ‘Guardian of the Blue Horizon’ award to all nations confronting climate challenges, symbolizing solidarity and shared resolve. This gesture reflected India’s ongoing support for Small Island Developing States and its leadership in global climate initiatives, including large-scale renewable energy expansion and lifestyle-based sustainability efforts.

Deepening Bilateral Cooperation in the Indian Ocean

Prime Minister Modi emphasized the strategic importance of Seychelles within India’s broader vision for the Indian Ocean Region. He described the ocean not as a barrier but as a vital link connecting the two nations. “The Indian Ocean does not separate India and Seychelles. It connects us,” he remarked, evoking a sense of shared destiny and mutual interdependence.

The Prime Minister proposed enhanced collaboration across several critical domains essential for long-term sustainability. These include fisheries, marine science, coastal management, renewable energy projects, and sustainable tourism. Such partnerships aim to harness the potential of the blue economy while protecting fragile marine environments for future generations. This vision builds upon existing frameworks of cooperation and is expected to yield multiple concrete outcomes during the visit.

The MGMM Outlook

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to the National Assembly of Seychelles reinforces India’s growing role as a responsible global partner that consistently advocates for climate justice and equitable development. By highlighting the disproportionate impact of climate change on small island nations despite their minimal contribution to global emissions, the speech underscores the urgent need for a fair international framework where developed nations shoulder greater responsibility. India’s continued support for the Global South and Small Island Developing States reflects a commitment to inclusive growth, sustainability, and shared resilience.

The address also strengthens the strategic and longstanding partnership between India and Seychelles, particularly in the Indian Ocean Region. Expanding cooperation in areas such as the blue economy, renewable energy, marine science, fisheries, coastal management, and sustainable tourism demonstrates a forward-looking vision that balances economic progress with environmental conservation. This collaboration not only deepens bilateral ties but also contributes to regional stability, maritime security, and sustainable development, reinforcing India's position as a trusted partner in the Indian Ocean.
