India-Japan Strategic Partnership Enters a New Era: Defence, Technology, and Economic Ties Strengthened at Modi-Takaichi Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi concluded a highly productive 16th Annual India-Japan Summit in New Delhi today, ushering in fresh momentum to the Special Strategic and Global Partnership between the two nations. The leaders signed the first-ever defence co-development pact, unveiled ambitious economic and technology agreements, and set a bold investment target that promises to deepen bilateral cooperation across multiple fronts.

PM Modi warmly welcomed his Japanese counterpart, referring to her affectionately as his “younger sister” and hailing her as a visionary “Japan First” leader. He noted that her maiden visit as Prime Minister was opening a promising new chapter in the long-standing friendship between India and Japan, rooted in shared democratic values and a common vision for a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific.

Landmark Defence Cooperation

The summit achieved a significant breakthrough in defence ties with the signing of India and Japan’s first joint defence co-development project. This pact marks a new phase in security collaboration, focusing on technologies that will support regional peace, maritime security, and a stable international order. Reports indicate the agreement includes initiatives such as the Unicorn naval antenna and enhanced naval exercises, reflecting growing strategic convergence between the two maritime democracies.

Ambitious Economic and Investment Agenda

Economic partnership received strong emphasis during the talks. The two sides announced a target of 10 trillion yen — approximately $65-70 billion — in Japanese private investment into India over the next decade. This investment is expected to boost key sectors including manufacturing, infrastructure development, and advanced technology collaboration. In the past year alone, Japanese and Indian businesses have signed over 120 new agreements, underlining the steady rise in bilateral economic engagement.

Bilateral trade has already crossed $27 billion in FY 2025-26, demonstrating robust momentum. The leaders also finalised a joint roadmap on economic security and energy security to build resilient supply chains amid global uncertainties.

Advancing Technology and Clean Energy Initiatives

Cooperation in emerging technologies formed another highlight of the summit. New pacts were signed to enhance collaboration in artificial intelligence, critical minerals and metals, semiconductors, and quantum technologies. These agreements aim to foster innovation and strengthen supply chain resilience in strategically important areas.

In the domain of sustainability, Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Takaichi launched the India-Japan Biogas Initiative under India’s Govardhan Pahal programme. The initiative will support the establishment of biogas and organic fertiliser plants across the country, promoting clean energy, rural livelihoods, and environmental sustainability while further strengthening bilateral green economy ties.

Shared Vision for the Indo-Pacific and Beyond

Throughout the summit, discussions spanned defence, trade, technology, supply chain resilience, and regional security. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The outcomes build upon previous high-level engagements and signal a pragmatic approach to addressing contemporary global challenges through trusted partnerships.

The MGMM Outlook

The outcomes of the India-Japan Summit reflect a relationship that is evolving beyond traditional diplomacy into a comprehensive strategic partnership. The first defence co-development agreement, ambitious investment commitments, and collaboration in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, quantum technologies, and critical minerals demonstrate that both countries are preparing to address future economic and security challenges together. Coupled with stronger supply chain cooperation and a shared commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific, these developments reinforce the growing trust between two democratic nations with converging strategic interests.

The launch of the India-Japan Biogas Initiative and the roadmap on economic and energy security further highlight a partnership that balances economic growth with sustainability and innovation. As Japanese investments continue to expand and bilateral cooperation deepens across defence, infrastructure, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing, the relationship is well positioned to create long-term opportunities for both countries while contributing to regional stability, resilient supply chains, and inclusive development across the Indo-Pacific.
