Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred with the prestigious ‘Guardian of the Blue Horizon’, Seychelles’ highest honour recognising exceptional leadership in environmental conservation and sustainable development. The award was presented by Seychelles President Dr. Patrick Herminie during a special ceremony on June 28, 2026, highlighting the deepening bonds of friendship between India and the island nation.
This distinction celebrates PM Modi’s consistent efforts to advance climate action, promote green growth, and champion the Blue Economy, while supporting the developmental aspirations of Small Island Developing States facing unique climate vulnerabilities.

In his gracious response to the honour, Prime Minister Modi dedicated the award to nations worldwide that are actively combating the challenges of climate change. The conferment of the award took place during Prime Minister Modi’s three-day State Visit to Seychelles from June 27 to 29, 2026. He was invited as the Guest of Honour for the Golden Jubilee celebrations commemorating 50 years of Seychelles’ independence. The visit also coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles, providing a significant opportunity to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
During the visit, PM Modi held delegation-level talks with President Herminie, focusing on enhancing ties in defence, security, maritime cooperation, and sustainable development. These include the Food and Agriculture Organisation’s Agricola Medal awarded in May 2026 for advancements in agriculture and food security, the 2018 Seoul Peace Prize for sustainable economic growth and inclusive development, and the United Nations Champions of the Earth Award, the UN’s highest environmental honour, also received in 2018.
