Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday participated in the grand Somnath Amrut Mahotsav celebrations, marking 75 years since the inauguration of the reconstructed Somnath Temple. During the event, he drew inspiring connections between the temple’s historic resilience and India’s strategic achievements, particularly recalling the 1998 Pokhran nuclear tests conducted on the same date.
After offering prayers and participating in sacred rituals including the Vishesh Maha Puja, Kumbhabhishek, and Dhvajarohan, the Prime Minister addressed the gathering. He highlighted how May 11 symbolises both spiritual renewal and national technological strength.
The Historic Coincidence of May 11
Prime Minister Modi noted the profound significance of the day. On May 11, 1998, India conducted the first three nuclear tests under Operation Shakti at Pokhran in Rajasthan. Two additional tests followed on May 13. He described how Indian scientists demonstrated the nation’s capabilities to the world, even as the country faced intense international pressure and sanctions.
“On this very day in 1998, India conducted nuclear tests in Pokhran. Many kinds of restrictions were imposed and paths of economic opportunities were blocked. Powerful nations across the world launched a massive campaign, but we are made of a different soil,” PM Modi stated. He praised the strong political will that guided the nation through those challenging times and affirmed, “No power in the world can force India to bow down or yield to pressure.”
The operation was named “Shakti,” drawing from India’s deep cultural and spiritual traditions, symbolising the inner strength that has defined the nation through centuries.
Somnath Temple: A Symbol of Civilisational Resilience
The Somnath Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva, stands as a powerful emblem of India’s enduring faith and cultural continuity. Historically, the temple faced repeated invasions and destruction over a thousand years, beginning notably with the attack in 1026. Yet, it was rebuilt time and again by devotees and rulers, reflecting an unbreakable spirit of renewal.
In the post-independence era, the reconstruction gained momentum through the vision of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The present temple, built in the traditional Māru-Gurjara style, was inaugurated on May 11, 1951, by President Dr. Rajendra Prasad. This milestone represented not only physical restoration but also the reassertion of India’s civilisational identity after gaining political independence in 1947.
PM Modi described the Amrut Mahotsav as more than a commemoration of the past. He emphasised that Somnath continues to inspire future generations, linking its story of revival to India’s broader journey of self-reliance and progress.

May 11 is also observed as National Technology Day across India to honour the Pokhran tests and celebrate the country’s scientific achievements.
