BJP Scripts History in Bengal

The BJP achieved a resounding victory, securing 207 seats in the 294-member West Bengal Assembly and comfortably surpassing the majority threshold of 148. This marks the first time the party has formed a government in the state, ending the Trinamool Congress (TMC)’s 15-year tenure. The TMC secured 80 seats, while smaller parties including the Indian National Congress (2 seats), Aam Janata Unnayan Party (2 seats), CPI(M) (1 seat), and All India Secular Front (1 seat) accounted for the remainder. One constituency awaits further proceedings.

Elections were conducted in two phases on April 23 and April 29, witnessing an impressive voter turnout of nearly 93 percent, which underscored the strong public participation and engagement across the state.

A Personal Setback for Mamata Banerjee

In a notable development, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faced defeat in her Bhabanipur constituency, losing to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari by a margin of over 15,000 votes. Adhikari, who also successfully defended his Nandigram seat, has emerged as a prominent figure in the state’s evolving political landscape. Discussions are now underway regarding the formation of the new government, with expectations of an oath-taking ceremony in the coming days.

PM Modi’s Message to the People of Bengal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed party workers in Delhi, hailing the verdict as a “new chapter” in Bengal’s journey. He emphasised that people’s power had prevailed and expressed gratitude to the voters of the state. In his address, Modiji switched to Bengali to connect with the audience, underscoring the cultural resonance of the moment.

Factors Behind the Strong Mandate

The BJP’s performance reflects sustained organisational efforts over several years, building on its gradual progress in previous elections. The party focused on connecting with voters through development initiatives, welfare schemes, and effective grassroots outreach. Strong booth-level coordination and appeals that resonated with local sentiments contributed to the broad-based support across diverse regions of the state.

This victory expands the BJP’s presence in eastern India and is viewed as a significant milestone in national politics, given West Bengal’s demographic and strategic importance.

Looking Ahead: New Opportunities for Governance

With the results declared, attention has shifted to the formation of the new government and the implementation of its agenda for the state’s progress. The transition is expected to bring fresh momentum to governance, infrastructure development, and welfare programmes aimed at benefiting the people of West Bengal.

The MGMM Outlook

The decisive mandate in West Bengal marks a turning point in the state’s political trajectory, with the Bharatiya Janata Party breaking a long-standing stronghold and expanding its footprint in eastern India. The scale of the victory reflects deep organisational groundwork, consistent voter outreach, and a narrative centred on development and governance that resonated across regions. The high voter turnout further highlights strong public engagement and a clear desire for political change, while the defeat of Mamata Banerjee signals a major shift in the state’s leadership dynamics and electoral mood.

The international acknowledgment, particularly from Donald Trump congratulating Narendra Modi, underlines how closely global leaders are watching India’s internal political developments. This moment strengthens the perception of India’s growing political influence on the world stage while reinforcing bilateral ties. With a new government set to take charge, expectations are high around governance reforms, infrastructure push, and welfare delivery, positioning the state for a phase of renewed political and developmental momentum.
