PM Modi Inaugurates Ganga Expressway: A Landmark Boost to Uttar Pradesh’s Connectivity and Growth

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today formally inaugurated the 594-km Ganga Expressway, Uttar Pradesh’s longest expressway and one of India’s most significant greenfield highway projects. The six-lane, access-controlled corridor connects Meerut in western Uttar Pradesh to Prayagraj in the east, promising to transform regional travel, trade, and economic development across the state.

Project Overview and Key Features

The Ganga Expressway, developed by the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) at an estimated cost of approximately ₹36,230 crore, stands as a major engineering achievement. Built in a record time of less than 3.5 years after the foundation stone was laid in December 2021, the expressway is designed for speeds of up to 120 kmph and includes provisions for expansion to eight lanes in the future.

Spanning 12 districts — Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareli, Pratapgarh, and Prayagraj — the corridor runs from Bijoli village in Meerut to Judapur Dandu village near Prayagraj. It is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities from the current 10-12 hours to approximately 6-7 hours, offering a smoother and safer journey for commuters and transporters alike.

A distinctive element of the project is the 3.2-km integrated airstrip near Shahjahanpur, developed to support emergency operations for Indian Air Force aircraft. The expressway also incorporates modern safety infrastructure, including an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), CCTV surveillance, emergency call boxes, and dedicated response teams.

Economic and Industrial Impact

Beyond improved connectivity, the Ganga Expressway is envisioned as an integrated manufacturing and logistics corridor. The state government has identified over 6,507 acres of land for 12 industrial and logistics nodes along the route. These nodes will feature warehouses, cold storage facilities, food processing units, and manufacturing hubs, aimed at enhancing value chains, particularly in agriculture and allied sectors.

So far, authorities have received 987 expressions of interest from investors, representing potential investments worth nearly ₹47,000 crore across sectors such as textiles, electronics, logistics, engineering, and agro-processing. This development is set to create thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities while boosting agricultural marketing and attracting fresh capital into the region.

The expressway will integrate seamlessly with other major corridors in Uttar Pradesh, including the Purvanchal, Agra-Lucknow, Bundelkhand, and Gorakhpur Link expressways. Together, these form a robust high-speed road network that supports the state’s broader goal of fostering balanced regional growth and strengthening its position as a key economic hub in northern India.

Inauguration Highlights

During the inauguration ceremony held in Hardoi, Prime Minister Modi visited an exhibition showcasing the project’s features and broader development initiatives. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath highlighted the expressway’s role in linking villages, farmers, entrepreneurs, and young people, describing it as a vital lifeline for inclusive progress across the state.
