Warm Welcome and Cultural Celebrations
Prime Minister Modi arrived in Gangtok on April 27 and received a grand welcome marked by a vibrant two-kilometre roadshow. Later in the day, at the closing ceremony of Sikkim’s Golden Jubilee celebrations held at Paljor Stadium, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for multiple development projects valued at more than ₹4,000 crore. These initiatives span key sectors including healthcare, education, connectivity, tourism, agriculture, power, urban development, and environment, aimed at accelerating inclusive and sustainable growth in the state.
The projects include a 100-bedded Ayurveda hospital in Namchi, an Integrated Sowa Rigpa hospital in Deorali, the permanent campus of Sikkim University, upgrades to numerous schools with IT-enabled facilities, new bridges over the Teesta River, urban redevelopment initiatives, and tourism infrastructure such as the Ridge Precinct in Gangtok and facilities supporting the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. These efforts are expected to significantly enhance connectivity, healthcare access, educational opportunities, and economic prospects for the people of Sikkim.
Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister praised Sikkim’s progress, its focus on cleanliness, and the talent of its people. He emphasised the importance of strengthening infrastructure and connectivity to boost tourism and overall development in the northeastern region.
