Kal Drone: India’s Emerging Long-Range Strike Capability and Its Export Promise

India’s defence sector has undergone a quiet but decisive transformation over the past decade. Once known primarily as one of the world’s largest arms importers, the country has steadily built a reputation as a reliable exporter of indigenous systems. In the financial year 2025-26, defence exports reached a record Rs 38,424 crore, marking a 62.66 per cent increase over the previous year. This growth reflects both public-sector strength and the rising contribution of private industry. Among the systems driving this shift is the BrahMos missile, which has already secured customers in Southeast Asia. A newer contender is now drawing attention: the Kal long-range one-way attack drone developed by Odisha-based IG Defence. Designed as a Shahed-class loitering munition, the Kal is being positioned as a potential major addition to India’s export portfolio, particularly for markets in the Gulf region.

The Rise of Private Industry and the Birth of Kal

IG Defence began life in 2018 as IG Drones, focusing on commercial applications in infrastructure, mining and surveying. As national priorities shifted toward greater self-reliance in defence manufacturing, the company expanded into military technologies. Its research and development base remains in Bhubaneswar, while production and corporate operations are concentrated in the Noida-Ghaziabad area. The Kal programme, initially called Project KAL, was publicly unveiled in early 2026 and displayed at the North Tech Symposium in Prayagraj later that year. Senior military leaders, including the Chief of Army Staff, examined the system and acknowledged its potential. Company founder and chief executive Bodhisattwa Sanghapriya has described the platform as a step toward building indigenous long-range autonomous strike capabilities suited to modern battlefields.


Technical Features and Operational Role

The Kal is engineered as a deep-penetration, one-way attack drone capable of striking high-value targets far beyond the front line. It offers an operational range of up to 1,000 kilometres and an endurance of seven to eight hours, allowing it to loiter over an area before committing to a strike. With a maximum take-off weight of around 200 kilograms, it carries a 50-kilogram high-explosive warhead. The aircraft cruises at approximately 160 kilometres per hour and can reach a top speed of 200 kilometres per hour while operating at altitudes up to 5,000 metres. It is designed for all-weather performance across a temperature range from minus 20 to 60 degrees Celsius.


Navigation relies on a multi-layered, electronic-warfare-hardened system that combines satellite and inertial guidance, enabling autonomous flight even in contested environments. Day and night sensors, including a high-resolution optical camera and thermal imaging, support both surveillance and terminal targeting. Communication is maintained through an encrypted radio link with satellite relay for operations beyond line of sight. Launch options include an inclined rail system with rocket-assisted take-off or vehicle-based deployment, giving operators flexibility in austere conditions. Production capacity at the company’s Ghaziabad facility is currently around 100 units per month. IG Defence has already supplied thousands of smaller FPV combat drones to the Indian armed forces and continues to participate in domestic tenders for long-range systems.


Place in the Global Landscape

The Kal belongs to the same broad family of long-range one-way attack drones as Iran’s Shahed-136, Russia’s Geran-2 and the American LUCAS. These platforms share a similar delta-wing, pusher-propeller configuration and are valued for their relatively low cost and ability to saturate air defences. Publicly available data places the Kal’s 50-kilogram warhead and 1,000-kilometre range in a competitive position within this category. Other Indian private firms are also developing comparable systems, indicating a broader national effort to master this technology.


Growing International Interest

In August 2026, IG Defence confirmed that it was engaged in advanced discussions with several Gulf countries interested in acquiring the Kal. Company sources indicated that some negotiations could conclude within the current financial year, with the possibility of initial deliveries following government export clearances. The interest coincides with regional tensions that have highlighted the practical value of affordable, autonomous long-range strike systems. Additional inquiries have been reported from other friendly nations. Officials emphasise that any exports will proceed only after full regulatory approval, consistent with India’s policy of supplying trusted partners.


Contribution to National Goals

The emergence of platforms such as the Kal sits within a larger pattern of defence export growth. Alongside the BrahMos, India has found markets for systems including the Pinaka rocket launcher, air-defence equipment, helicopters and naval vessels. The government has set a target of Rs 50,000 crore in annual defence exports by the end of the decade. Private companies are expected to play an expanding role in meeting this ambition. IG Defence itself aims to build a substantial order pipeline over the coming years while continuing to refine its portfolio of unmanned and precision-strike systems.

The Kal drone represents a tangible advance in India’s ability to design, produce and potentially export sophisticated unmanned strike platforms. Its combination of range, endurance, autonomy and cost-effectiveness addresses a clear operational demand visible in recent conflicts. Whether it achieves the commercial success of the BrahMos will depend on proven performance, production scale and the outcome of ongoing discussions with prospective customers. What is already evident is that private Indian industry is moving into domains once considered the preserve of large state programmes or foreign suppliers. In doing so, it is helping to convert the goal of technological self-reliance into practical military capability that can serve both national requirements and the needs of partner countries.
