Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday celebrated the completion of 11 years of the Digital India programme, underscoring its profound role in redefining governance, empowering citizens, and granting India a vibrant new identity on the world stage. What began as a visionary initiative has grown into a nationwide movement that continues to drive inclusive development and position India as a leader in digital innovation.

Foundation and Vision of Digital India
Launched on July 1, 2015, Digital India set out to bridge the digital divide and harness technology for the benefit of all citizens. Built around nine foundational pillars — including broadband connectivity, universal mobile access, public internet centres, e-governance, and electronics manufacturing — the programme has expanded digital infrastructure across the country. It has connected remote villages through optical fibre networks and brought essential services directly to people’s fingertips, making governance more accessible and responsive.
Over the past 11 years, Digital India has fundamentally reshaped how citizens interact with government services. Seamless digital payments, transparent direct benefit transfers, and robust digital public infrastructure have enhanced efficiency while reducing leakages and empowering ordinary citizens.
Empowering Citizens and Transforming Lives
Digital India has touched every aspect of daily life and delivered tangible benefits to millions. Platforms such as Aadhaar, DigiLocker, CoWIN, GeM, DIKSHA, UMANG, FASTag, and eSanjeevani have simplified access to essential services, from healthcare and education to financial transactions and property records. These tools have particularly uplifted small entrepreneurs, artisans, and MSMEs by eliminating middlemen and opening direct market opportunities across the nation.
The programme has played a key role in bridging gaps and promoting inclusive growth. By democratising technology, it has enabled even those in remote areas to participate in the digital economy, fostering greater participation and self-reliance.
India’s Rising Global Footprint in Digital Innovation
The success of Digital India has earned international recognition. India now leads the world in real-time digital payments, with the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) accounting for nearly 49 percent of global transaction volume. UPI operates successfully in multiple countries, including the UAE, Singapore, France, Mauritius, and Sri Lanka, showcasing the scalability and reliability of Indian digital solutions.
India’s Digital Public Infrastructure has become a model for other nations. Through initiatives launched during India’s G20 Presidency, such as the Global DPI Repository and a dedicated Social Impact Fund, the country is actively supporting digital adoption in regions across Africa and South Asia. Flagship platforms continue to inspire global digital governance frameworks, highlighting India’s emergence as a trusted innovation partner.
Prime Minister Modi emphasised this global dimension, noting that the initiative reflects the determination of Indians to embrace innovation and elevate the nation. He described the transformative power of a billion people adopting technology as a force that strengthens both national progress and international cooperation.
Looking Ahead: The Next Decade of Digital Leadership
As Digital India enters its second decade, the focus shifts toward deeper integration of emerging technologies, responsible artificial intelligence, and expanded global collaboration. The programme has already contributed significantly to economic growth, with the digital economy playing an increasingly vital role in India’s GDP. Continued emphasis on skill development, startup ecosystems, and inclusive innovation promises even greater achievements in the years ahead.
The MGMM Outlook
Over the past 11 years, Digital India has evolved into one of the country's most impactful governance and development initiatives, demonstrating how technology can bridge social and geographical gaps while making public services more transparent, efficient, and accessible. By expanding digital infrastructure and introducing citizen-centric platforms, the programme has empowered individuals, strengthened financial inclusion, supported entrepreneurs and MSMEs, and enabled millions to participate in the digital economy with greater ease and confidence.
The initiative has also elevated India's standing as a global leader in digital innovation. The widespread success of Digital Public Infrastructure and the international adoption of solutions like UPI reflect India's ability to create scalable, inclusive technologies that benefit not only its own citizens but also partner nations worldwide. As Digital India enters its next phase, continued investment in emerging technologies, digital skills, and responsible innovation will further strengthen India's journey toward a self-reliant, technologically advanced, and globally influential nation.
