BJP Sweeps West Bengal Bypolls, Wins Assam’s Nagaon Seat by a Significant Margin
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered significant victories in the October 2026 by-elections in Assam and West Bengal, strengthening its electoral position in eastern India. The party won both Assembly constituencies contested in West Bengal and secured the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in Assam, highlighting its strong performance across the two states.
The results, declared on October 9, drew attention to changing political dynamics and the growing importance of constituency-level electoral support. While the BJP secured decisive victories in West Bengal’s Rejinagar and Nandigram constituencies, its win in Assam’s Nagaon parliamentary constituency marked an important achievement in the state’s political landscape.

BJP Wins Both Assembly Seats in West Bengal
The BJP secured victories in both Rejinagar and Nandigram, delivering a strong performance in the West Bengal by-elections. In Rejinagar, BJP candidate Shankharavh Sarkar defeated Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) candidate Golam Nabi Azad by 75,816 votes. Sarkar received 1,29,914 votes, while Azad secured 54,098. Congress candidate Abdullahil Kafi finished third with 6,168 votes. The result attracted particular attention because Rejinagar is located in Murshidabad district, an area with a substantial Muslim population.
In Nandigram, BJP candidate Hasirani Rath defeated Congress nominee Milan Pradhan by a margin of 1,22,753 votes. Rath secured 1,64,427 votes, compared with Pradhan’s 41,674. The victory reinforced the BJP’s position in the constituency, which has remained an important centre of political activity in West Bengal.
Winning both seats gave the BJP a clean sweep of the West Bengal by-elections. The results also highlighted the challenges facing opposition parties as they seek to strengthen their organisational presence and expand their electoral support across the state.
BJP Wins Assam’s Nagaon Lok Sabha By-Election
In Assam, BJP candidate Devashish Sharma won the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election, defeating All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal. The victory marked the BJP’s return to the constituency after Congress had held the seat for seven years.
Sharma, a former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer who previously served as Nagaon’s deputy commissioner, contested the election with administrative experience and familiarity with the region. His victory represented a significant gain for the BJP in Assam’s parliamentary politics.
The contest was closely watched because of Ajmal’s established political presence in the state. The outcome highlighted the competitive nature of Assam’s electoral landscape, where local concerns, candidate profiles, party organisation and voter preferences play important roles.
The Nagaon result also added to the BJP’s electoral gains in the region. Alongside its victories in West Bengal, the outcome strengthened the party’s position across the two states and provided fresh momentum for its political organisation.
Electoral Significance for Eastern India
The results in Assam and West Bengal demonstrate the importance of regional political dynamics and constituency-level support. The BJP’s victories in Rejinagar and Nandigram, combined with its success in Nagaon, marked a strong performance in this round of by-elections.
For opposition parties, the results offer an opportunity to examine their electoral strategies, candidate selection and local outreach. At the same time, by-election outcomes are influenced by constituency-specific circumstances and should be considered within their immediate political context rather than treated as definitive predictions of future elections.
The MGMM Outlook
The BJP’s victories in the October 2026 by-elections in West Bengal and Assam mark a significant electoral achievement for the party in eastern India. In West Bengal, the BJP secured both Rejinagar and Nandigram, with Shankharavh Sarkar and Hasirani Rath winning by substantial margins. In Assam, Devashish Sharma’s victory in the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election against AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal marked an important gain for the BJP in the state. These results highlight the party’s electoral performance across the two states and reinforce its presence in constituencies with distinct political and regional dynamics.
The victories also underline the importance of strong organisational outreach, candidate selection and sustained engagement with voters. While by-election results reflect the political circumstances of individual constituencies, the BJP’s performance in all three contests provides fresh momentum for its political activities in the region. As political parties prepare for future electoral challenges, addressing local concerns and responding to public expectations will remain essential. The results offer the BJP an opportunity to build on its gains and strengthen its engagement with communities across Assam and West Bengal.
