The Assam Police Special Task Force (STF) has arrested a second person in connection with an alleged Pakistan-linked espionage case in Guwahati. The development comes as investigators probe the suspected transmission of sensitive information related to security forces to a Pakistan Intelligence Operative (PIO).

The latest accused has been identified as 39-year-old Ritesh Kumar Singh, a native of Begusarai in Bihar. He was reportedly staying in a rented accommodation in the Satgaon area of Guwahati. According to the Assam STF, Singh was initially taken into custody for questioning and was subsequently arrested after investigators found suspected links to the ongoing espionage case.

Second Arrest in the Ongoing Investigation

Ritesh Kumar Singh's arrest follows the detention of 31-year-old Abhishek Kumar Singh, another Bihar native, from the Satgaon area during the intervening night of October 3 and 4. Investigators allege that Abhishek was in contact with a Pakistan Intelligence Operative and had been involved in sharing sensitive information concerning security forces. The STF reportedly recovered mobile phones, SIM cards and documents during the operation, which are now being examined as part of the investigation.

Following the first arrest, investigators began examining whether other individuals were connected to the alleged network. Ritesh Kumar Singh was subsequently questioned over his suspected involvement. Police have alleged that he too was involved in sharing sensitive information with a Pakistan-linked operative.

Military Intelligence Input Led to the Probe

The investigation reportedly began after inputs were received from the Military Intelligence unit associated with the Tezpur-based Gajraj Corps. The information was subsequently developed by the Assam Police STF, leading to further investigation into suspected espionage activities in Guwahati.

The location of the suspects has also attracted attention. They were reportedly staying in rented accommodation in the Satgaon area, which is situated near the Narengi Army camp. Investigators are examining whether the proximity to military establishments had any relevance to the alleged activities.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier confirmed that two individuals had been arrested in connection with allegations of sharing information relating to Army movements with Pakistan-linked operatives.

Retired Army Personnel Among Those Arrested

One of the significant developments in the case is the reported involvement of a former Army personnel. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that one of the individuals arrested in the initial operation was a retired Army jawan who had later worked with the Army on a contractual basis.

According to reports, investigators suspect that the accused may have been targeted or contacted through online platforms. The Chief Minister also referred to allegations involving online sex rackets operated by Pakistan-linked handlers. However, investigators have not publicly disclosed the complete details of the alleged communication or the precise information that may have been shared. Authorities are now examining digital evidence and other material recovered during the investigation to determine the extent of the alleged links.

Probe Focuses on Digital Evidence and Wider Network

The STF is examining mobile phones, SIM cards, documents and other material recovered from the accused. Investigators are expected to analyse communication records to establish how the suspects allegedly came into contact with Pakistan-linked operatives and how information may have been transmitted.

Authorities are also looking into whether the two accused were acting independently or were part of a larger network. The investigation could lead to further arrests if evidence establishes the involvement of additional individuals.

At present, officials have not publicly revealed the precise nature or quantity of the information allegedly shared. The investigation is expected to provide greater clarity on the communications, the suspected handlers and the possible extent of the security-related information involved.

Assam Strengthens Vigilance Against Espionage Activities

The case has once again brought attention to the importance of intelligence coordination in Assam, particularly because of the state's strategic location and the presence of important military and security establishments.

The involvement of the STF, along with intelligence inputs and further examination of digital evidence, highlights the multi-agency approach being used to investigate suspected espionage activities. Authorities are continuing to verify the allegations and establish the complete chain of events before determining the wider scope of the case.

The MGMM Outlook

The arrest of Ritesh Kumar Singh marks another significant development in the Assam STF’s investigation into an alleged Pakistan-linked espionage network in Guwahati. The case began with intelligence inputs from Military Intelligence and has so far led to the arrests of two individuals suspected of sharing sensitive security-related information with Pakistan-linked operatives. The recovery of mobile phones, SIM cards and documents is now being examined to establish the nature of the alleged communications and the extent of the information that may have been transmitted.

The investigation also highlights the importance of intelligence coordination and digital evidence in identifying possible espionage networks. With authorities examining the suspects’ communication records, backgrounds and possible links to other individuals, the probe could provide further clarity on the alleged network and whether additional arrests are warranted. Continued vigilance around sensitive defence information, particularly in strategically important areas, remains essential, while the allegations will ultimately be determined through the ongoing investigation and due legal process.
