In a grand ceremony at the Veterinary College Field in Khanapara, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second successive term today. Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy. This event marks the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) historic third consecutive victory in the state, reflecting strong public trust in the alliance’s vision for progress and stability.
The swearing-in was attended by an impressive gathering of national leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the chief guest, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and several other Union ministers. Chief Ministers and Deputy Chief Ministers from over 20 NDA-ruled states, along with dignitaries such as newly appointed West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and US Ambassador Sergio Gor, added to the significance of the occasion. Cultural performances and tight security arrangements highlighted the festive yet solemn atmosphere in Guwahati.

A Decisive Mandate for Continuity
The Assam Assembly elections, held on April 9, 2026, with results declared on May 4, delivered a resounding mandate for the NDA. The alliance secured 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly. The BJP won 82 seats on its own, registering a notable increase from previous elections, while its allies — the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) — contributed 10 seats each. This victory has strengthened the foundation for continued governance focused on development and people-centric initiatives.
Dr. Sarma secured a convincing win from the Jalukbari constituency with a margin exceeding 89,000 votes. Alongside him, four ministers — Rameswar Teli and Ajanta Neog from the BJP, Atul Bora from the AGP, and Charan Boro from the BPF — took oath today. Senior BJP MLA Ranjit Das is set to assume the role of Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly.
Progress During the First Term
Over the past five years, Assam has witnessed notable advancements under Sarma’s leadership. The state achieved impressive economic growth, with significant improvements in infrastructure, including new roads, highways, and urban development projects. Healthcare facilities expanded through the establishment of new medical colleges and widespread access to cashless treatment. Welfare schemes such as enhanced Orunodoi financial assistance, student support programs, and Mission Basundhara for land rights have reached millions of households, promoting inclusivity across communities.
Efforts to strengthen peace and harmony, alongside initiatives for education, women’s empowerment, and job creation, have contributed to a positive transformation. These outcomes have laid a strong groundwork for the new term, with the government aiming to accelerate industrial growth, safeguard indigenous culture, and ensure equitable development across the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys.
Looking Ahead: Vision for a Viksit Assam
In his address following the oath-taking, Sarma expressed gratitude to the people of Assam and national leadership, describing his first term as a “trailer” and pledging a fuller focus on comprehensive development in the coming years. Priorities include further land reforms, enhanced connectivity, skill development, and maintaining law and order to support long-term prosperity.
This re-election positions Assam as a key player in India’s Northeast, building on the momentum of stability and progress. As the new government begins its journey, expectations remain high for sustained growth that benefits every section of society.
