PM Modi Hails BJP’s Bypoll Victories in Bengal and Assam, Says Voters’ Mandate Adds Strength
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) victories in the Nandigram and Rejinagar Assembly by-elections in West Bengal and the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election in Assam. Describing the results as a source of renewed strength, the Prime Minister thanked voters for their support and congratulated the winning candidates and party workers for their efforts.
In his message on social media platform X, Modiji highlighted the public’s confidence in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) governance agenda. He said the mandate would encourage the party to continue working towards development, public welfare and a more prosperous future for citizens. The Prime Minister also congratulated the All India N.R. Congress (AINRC), an NDA ally, on its victory in the Thattanchavady Assembly by-election in Puducherry. The results provided fresh momentum for the BJP in West Bengal and Assam, while the victory of its alliance partner further strengthened the NDA’s performance across the bypolls.

BJP Records Decisive Wins in West Bengal
The BJP registered a substantial victory in Nandigram, where its candidate Hasi Rani Rath secured 1,64,427 votes, defeating Congress candidate Milan Pradhan by a margin of 1,22,753 votes. The result was particularly significant because Nandigram has long occupied an important place in West Bengal’s political landscape.
Rath’s victory also drew attention because of her family’s association with Suvendu Adhikari, the West Bengal Chief Minister. She is the mother of Chandranath Rath, Adhikari’s former personal assistant, who was killed in May 2026. The by-election followed Adhikari’s decision to retain the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency after winning both Bhabanipur and Nandigram in the state elections.
The BJP also secured a notable victory in Rejinagar, where its candidate Shankharavh Sarkar defeated Aam Janata Unnayan Party candidate Golam Nabi Azad by 75,816 votes. Sarkar received 1,29,914 votes against Azad’s 54,098. The outcome added to the BJP’s electoral gains in the state and highlighted the importance of local campaigning and voter outreach.
BJP Strengthens Its Position in Assam
In Assam, the BJP won the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election with Devasish Sharma emerging victorious. The contest attracted attention after former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi joined the BJP, leaving the parliamentary seat vacant and setting the stage for another electoral battle in the constituency.
The victory added to the BJP’s electoral gains and reinforced its position in Assam. The party has continued to emphasise development, infrastructure and public welfare as key elements of its governance agenda in the state.
The Nagaon result also carried parliamentary significance, as the by-election determined representation in the Lok Sabha. For the BJP, the outcome offered an opportunity to consolidate its political presence while building on its organisational efforts in Assam.
NDA Ally Wins in Puducherry
The BJP’s electoral successes were accompanied by a victory for its NDA partner, the All India N.R. Congress, in Puducherry’s Thattanchavady Assembly constituency. AINRC candidate Ashok Anand defeated his Congress rival by a margin of 8,482 votes.
Prime Minister Modi congratulated the party on the result, acknowledging the contribution of the alliance partner. The victory added another positive outcome for the NDA in the by-elections and underlined the role of regional allies in strengthening the alliance’s presence across different parts of the country.
Taken together, the results across West Bengal, Assam and Puducherry provided the BJP and its allies with renewed political momentum. They also offered an opportunity for the parties to build on their electoral performance through continued engagement with voters and a focus on governance.
The MGMM Outlook
The BJP’s victories in the Nandigram and Rejinagar Assembly by-elections in West Bengal and the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election in Assam, along with its NDA ally AINRC’s win in Puducherry, mark a significant electoral boost for the alliance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked voters for their support and congratulated the winning candidates and party workers, describing the mandate as a source of renewed strength. These results highlight the importance of organisational efforts, grassroots outreach and continued engagement with voters across different regions.
The victories provide fresh momentum for the BJP and the NDA to strengthen their public outreach and advance their focus on development, governance and public welfare. As political attention turns towards future electoral contests, sustaining voter confidence will depend on continued engagement with local communities and addressing their expectations. The results also underline the contribution of regional allies in expanding the NDA’s presence, while offering the BJP an opportunity to build on its electoral gains in West Bengal and Assam.
