Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025 on May 1 in Mumbai. The grand event brought together prominent figures from India's film industries and digital content landscape, drawing attention from across the globe.

In his keynote address, PM Modi underscored the immense potential of India’s creative sectors—particularly content creation—in propelling the country’s economic growth. He also announced the WAVES Awards, a new initiative aimed at recognising excellence in the entertainment and digital media industries.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), WAVES 2025 marks a significant milestone as India's first summit of its kind. It comprises 42 plenary sessions, 39 breakout discussions, and 32 masterclasses, covering domains such as broadcasting, infotainment, AVGC-XR, film, and digital media.

This is only the beginning of Viksit Bharat (Developed India). Our billion-plus population carries a billion-plus stories,” PM Modi said.
2. India: A Treasure Trove of Stories
Reaffirming India’s rich cultural and narrative heritage, PM Modi noted: “The world seeks new storytelling formats, and India’s age-old yet relevant stories span culture, science, and sports. These stories must be shared globally—this is a key responsibility of the WAVES platform.”

PM Modi spoke about the emerging “orange economy”—the creative economy. “Indian films, food, and music are gaining global popularity. This is just the beginning of India’s cultural influence on the world stage,” he remarked.

“The Padma Awards have transformed into ‘People’s Padma Awards’, recognising unsung heroes. Similarly, WAVES will spotlight talent from every corner of India—especially in music, gaming, and animation,” PM Modi stated.
6. A Global Wave of Creativity
“Artists, investors, policymakers, and creators from over 100 countries have converged here. WAVES is more than just an acronym—it’s a real wave of culture, creativity, and global unity. Every idea has a place in this wave of innovation,” he emphasized.
7. OTT: Small Screens, Massive Potential
Reflecting on the growth of Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms, he said: “OTT has seen 10X growth in India. Though screen sizes may be small, their impact and opportunities are immense.”
