ASEAN: A Key Pillar of India’s Act East Policy

ASEAN occupies an important position in India’s regional strategy, supporting cooperation in trade, connectivity, infrastructure, technology and defence. India’s Act East Policy seeks to strengthen its historical and economic ties with Southeast Asia while expanding engagement across the wider Indo-Pacific.

The partnership has developed over several decades, with India and ASEAN establishing a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2022. Their cooperation also supports improved connectivity between India’s northeastern region and Southeast Asian markets, creating opportunities for economic growth, investment and people-to-people exchanges.

ADMM-Plus Strengthens Regional Defence Dialogue

The ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus brings together ASEAN member states and eight dialogue partners, including India, the United States, Japan, Australia, China and Russia. The forum provides an important platform for discussing common security concerns and advancing practical defence cooperation.

Issues such as maritime security, counter-terrorism, cybersecurity and disaster response remain significant for the region. Greater coordination among participating countries can strengthen communication, build mutual confidence and improve their capacity to respond to emerging challenges.

Maritime Security and Strategic Partnerships in Focus

Maritime security is a major component of India’s engagement with ASEAN, as the Indo-Pacific contains vital shipping routes that support international trade and energy supplies. Cooperation in maritime awareness, naval exercises and information-sharing can contribute to protecting these routes and maintaining regional stability.

India is also working to expand defence partnerships through bilateral discussions, joint exercises and industrial collaboration. Stronger engagement with regional partners complements its broader Indo-Pacific vision, which emphasises inclusiveness, respect for sovereignty and the peaceful resolution of disputes.

The MGMM Outlook

India’s emphasis on ASEAN’s central role in its Act East Policy reflects its commitment to strengthening strategic partnerships and promoting peace and stability across the Indo-Pacific. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s remarks at the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus in the Philippines highlight the importance of regional dialogue, mutual trust and coordinated action to address emerging security challenges. Through stronger defence cooperation, joint exercises and maritime security initiatives, India continues to deepen its engagement with Southeast Asian nations while protecting vital trade routes and supporting regional stability.

Strengthening cooperation through ASEAN-led platforms can also create opportunities for greater collaboration in counter-terrorism, cybersecurity, disaster response and defence technology. As regional security challenges become increasingly interconnected, sustained engagement and information-sharing among partner countries will remain essential. India’s continued participation in these initiatives reinforces its role as a constructive regional partner and supports the broader objective of building a peaceful, secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific through cooperation, respect for sovereignty and shared responsibility.
