Modi Government Approves Two-Year Service Extension for Agniveers, Creates New Pathway to Regular Military Service
The Narendra Modi-led Central Government has approved a significant revision to the Agnipath recruitment scheme, providing Agniveers with an additional two years of service and a greater opportunity to pursue a long-term career in the Indian Armed Forces. The decision, announced on November 4, 2026, allows the remaining 75% of Agniveers, who were previously expected to leave after completing their initial four-year tenure, to continue serving for another two years.
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the proposal following recommendations from the defence establishment. Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General NS Raja Subramani announced the decision in New Delhi, highlighting the positive performance of Agniveers during their initial years of service. The revised arrangement will increase their potential engagement period from four to six years, while also introducing higher remuneration and an enhanced Seva Nidhi package.
The announcement comes as the first batch of Agniveers approaches the completion of its four-year tenure, with more than 18,300 personnel expected to complete their initial engagement by December 2026.

Two-Year Extension Opens New Opportunities for Agniveers
Under the original Agnipath framework, introduced on June 14, 2022, 25% of Agniveers were eligible for enrolment into the regular Armed Forces based on merit and organisational requirements. The remaining 75% were expected to return to civilian life after completing four years of service.
The latest revision introduces an additional two-year engagement period for this remaining group. After completing the extended tenure, Agniveers who wish to continue serving will be given an opportunity to join the regular Armed Forces, subject to prescribed selection criteria.
This provides a broader pathway for young personnel to build a military career and demonstrate their capabilities over a longer period. The selection process will continue to consider individual performance and the requirements of the armed forces, meaning permanent enrolment will depend on meeting the established criteria.
Higher Salary and Enhanced Seva Nidhi Package
An important feature of the revised arrangement is the improvement in financial benefits. Agniveers serving during the additional two-year period will receive higher monthly remuneration compared with their original engagement.
According to details reported by Moneycontrol, the monthly package will increase to approximately ₹43,500 during the fifth year of service and ₹47,500 during the sixth year. Personnel who choose to exit after completing the extended engagement will also receive an enhanced Seva Nidhi package.
These improvements recognise the continued contribution of Agniveers and provide additional financial benefits for those who dedicate two more years to military service. The revised structure also makes the extended engagement more attractive for young personnel considering a longer association with the armed forces.
Positive Performance Feedback Behind the Decision
The decision follows a four-year assessment of the Agnipath programme and the performance of its recruits. General NS Raja Subramani stated that the armed forces had received encouraging feedback regarding the physical fitness, motivation, morale, discipline and technological adaptability of Agniveers.
Their experience during training and active service has provided valuable insights into the requirements of a modern military workforce. Retaining trained personnel for an additional two years can also help the services make better use of their existing skills and operational experience.
The review reflects the importance of adapting recruitment policies to changing defence requirements while creating opportunities for young personnel to progress within the military establishment.
Agnipath Scheme Continues With Further Reforms
The Agnipath scheme was introduced to develop a younger, fitter and technologically capable defence force. Since its launch, the programme has expanded recruitment opportunities across different regions of India and introduced a structured selection and training framework for the Army, Navy and Air Force.
The government has also focused on improving recruitment procedures, educational opportunities and skill development for Agniveers. The revised recruitment process includes a more streamlined selection structure, while skill certificates help personnel demonstrate the professional capabilities acquired during their service.
The additional engagement period builds on these provisions by giving personnel more time to develop military expertise and pursue regular enrolment. It also supports the armed forces in maintaining a balance between a youthful workforce and experienced personnel who understand military operations and responsibilities.
Strengthening India's Military Workforce
The two-year extension is particularly significant for India's defence preparedness. Modern military operations increasingly require personnel who can adapt to advanced technology, sophisticated equipment and changing operational environments. Retaining trained Agniveers for a longer duration can contribute to greater continuity within military units and help preserve valuable experience.
The revised arrangement also creates a more extended period for personnel to demonstrate their leadership, discipline and professional capabilities. For young Indians who aspire to serve the country, it offers another opportunity to pursue a career in the armed forces rather than transitioning into civilian life immediately after their initial four-year engagement.
The MGMM Outlook
The Modi government’s decision to approve an additional two-year service extension for Agniveers marks a significant step towards creating greater career opportunities for young personnel in the Indian Armed Forces. By extending the engagement period from four to six years, the revised arrangement provides the remaining 75% of Agniveers with more time to gain military experience and an additional opportunity to qualify for regular enrolment based on merit and service requirements. The increase in monthly remuneration, along with an enhanced Seva Nidhi package, further recognises their contribution and dedication to national service. The decision also reflects the government's willingness to review and strengthen the Agnipath scheme based on the experience and feedback of military leadership.
The extended service period can benefit both Agniveers and the armed forces by retaining trained personnel, preserving operational experience and strengthening the military's ability to meet evolving defence requirements. Positive feedback regarding the recruits' discipline, physical fitness, motivation and technological adaptability has further highlighted their potential contribution to India's defence capabilities. For young Indians aspiring to serve the nation, this revision offers a broader opportunity to build a military career while developing valuable professional skills. Such reforms can support the vision of a younger, more capable and technologically prepared Indian military while strengthening the country's long-term national security.
