PM Modi Inaugurates Pune Metro Line 3, Lays Foundation for ₹13,500 Crore Phase II Expansion
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Pune Metro Line 3 on November 3, 2026, marking a major milestone in the development of Maharashtra's urban transportation infrastructure. He also laid the foundation stone for four new metro corridors under Phase II, involving an estimated investment of ₹13,500 crore. Together, these projects, valued at approximately ₹21,800 crore, are expected to significantly improve connectivity across Pune and its surrounding areas.
The inauguration marks an important step towards strengthening public transportation in Pune, a rapidly expanding centre for information technology, education and business. The new infrastructure is expected to make daily commuting more convenient, reduce pressure on busy roads and connect important residential and commercial areas. The programme was attended by Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Ajit Pawar.

Pune Metro Line 3 to Transform Connectivity Between Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar
The newly inaugurated 23.2-kilometre Pune Metro Line 3 connects Maan in Hinjewadi with the District Court station in Shivajinagar. Developed at an estimated cost of ₹8,313 crore, the elevated corridor is designed to improve connectivity between Pune's prominent IT hub and the city's central areas.
Hinjewadi is home to numerous technology companies and business establishments, attracting thousands of professionals every day. The new metro corridor will provide commuters with an alternative to road travel, helping reduce journey times and ease traffic congestion along one of Pune's busiest routes. Passenger services are scheduled to commence on November 4, with the remaining stations expected to become operational in phases.
The project has been developed under a public-private partnership model, making it an important example of collaboration in India's urban transportation sector. Its integration with the existing metro network at the District Court interchange will also allow passengers to travel more conveniently across different parts of Pune.
Modern Technology and Sustainable Metro Operations
Pune Metro Line 3 incorporates advanced railway technologies to improve passenger safety, operational efficiency and service reliability. Siemens has supplied key systems, including signalling, electrification, communication and depot equipment. The corridor uses Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology to support modern metro operations.
Sustainability is another important feature of the project. The metro infrastructure has an installed solar power generation capacity of approximately 7.60 MW, with solar energy expected to meet around 30% of its electricity requirements. This initiative will help reduce dependence on conventional energy sources and support environmentally responsible urban transportation.
The project also places emphasis on women's participation in public transport operations, with women train operators playing a central role in running the metro services. This represents a positive step towards expanding employment opportunities for women in the transportation sector.
₹13,500 Crore Investment to Expand Pune Metro Network
Alongside the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone for four additional metro corridors under Phase II, covering approximately 44.39 kilometres. The proposed expansion will extend metro connectivity to several developing residential, commercial and industrial areas.
The new corridors include the Vanaz–Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi–Vitthalwadi extensions under Lines 2A and 2B. The expansion will also include Line 4, connecting Kharadi with Khadakwasla, and Line 4A, linking Nal Stop with Manik Baug. These routes will improve access to important locations such as Kharadi, Magarpatta, Hadapsar, Swargate, Warje and Nanded City.
The expanded network is expected to benefit residents, students, professionals and businesses by providing more convenient transportation options. Improved interchange facilities will also connect the new corridors with existing metro services, creating a more integrated urban transport system.
Strengthening Pune's Future as a Growing Economic Centre
As Pune continues to develop as a major IT, manufacturing, education and commercial destination, the demand for reliable public transportation is increasing. Expanding metro connectivity will be essential to supporting this growth while making daily travel more efficient.
The new corridors are expected to improve access to employment centres, reduce dependence on private vehicles and encourage the use of public transportation. Better connectivity between residential neighbourhoods and commercial districts can also support business activities and contribute to more organised urban development.
Beyond improving mobility, the metro expansion represents a wider investment in the city's future. Modern transportation infrastructure can strengthen economic opportunities, improve accessibility and enhance the overall urban experience for residents.
The MGMM Outlook
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s inauguration of Pune Metro Line 3 and the foundation stone laying for four additional metro corridors mark a significant step towards strengthening India’s urban infrastructure. With a combined investment of approximately ₹21,800 crore, these projects are expected to improve connectivity across Pune, particularly between major residential, commercial and IT hubs. The 23.2-kilometre Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar corridor will provide commuters with a modern alternative to road transport, helping ease traffic congestion and make daily travel more convenient. The expansion also reflects the government's continued focus on developing modern public transportation through advanced technology, improved connectivity and sustainable infrastructure.
The Pune Metro expansion goes beyond transportation improvements, supporting the city's growing economic and employment opportunities. Features such as solar-powered operations, advanced signalling systems and greater participation of women in metro operations highlight the emphasis on modernisation and sustainability. The four new corridors are expected to connect more residential and business districts, benefiting students, professionals, businesses and local communities. Such infrastructure investments strengthen Pune's position as a major economic centre while contributing to India's broader vision of better-connected, efficient and future-ready cities.
