Rajnath Singh Condemns Kharge’s Remark on PM Modi, Calls It an Insult to India’s Political Dignity
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has strongly criticised Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over his controversial remark about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late father, describing it as an insult to the dignity of Indian politics. Singh expressed concern over the language used by a senior opposition leader, emphasising that political disagreements should remain within the boundaries of public decorum.
In his response on October 26, Singh maintained that democracy gives every political party the right to question government policies, challenge decisions and express opposition. However, he argued that such differences should not lead to personal remarks involving a leader’s family. He also stated that the controversy would not weaken Prime Minister Modi’s determination to serve the country.

How the Controversy Started in Patna
The controversy began on October 25 during an event in Patna commemorating the 139th birth anniversary of Bihar’s first Chief Minister, Dr Shri Krishna Singh. While addressing the gathering, Kharge was interrupted by an audience member who reportedly said that Prime Minister Modi would not leave office.
Responding to the interruption, Kharge said, “Modi ka baap bhi jayega,” which translates to “Even Modi’s father will have to go.” The remark triggered criticism from BJP leaders, who considered the language inappropriate and disrespectful towards the Prime Minister’s late father. The incident quickly became a major political issue, drawing reactions from senior leaders across party lines.
BJP Leaders Demand Accountability
Following the controversy, senior BJP leaders called on Kharge to apologise for his remarks. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also criticised the statement, arguing that political criticism should focus on policies and governance rather than personal matters involving family members.
On October 26, BJP leaders and workers held protests in several locations, including Delhi, Patna, Bengaluru and Jammu. In Patna, Bihar BJP president Sanjay Saraogi led a protest march, while demonstrators in Delhi gathered near Kharge’s residence. The protests reflected the party’s demand for accountability and its objection to language it considered inconsistent with the standards expected of senior political leaders.
Congress Defends Kharge’s Statement
The Congress defended its president, arguing that his response should be understood in the context of the exchange at the Patna event. Party leaders maintained that Kharge had been reacting to an interruption and disputed the BJP’s interpretation of his words.
The man who interrupted Kharge also subsequently offered a clarification, saying that his comment about Modiji not leaving office was intended to convey that the Prime Minister would remain in power as long as there was no rebellion in the country. The competing explanations have added another dimension to the controversy, with both parties presenting their interpretations of the exchange.
Political Decorum Remains Central to the Debate
The controversy has renewed discussion about the responsibilities of political leaders when addressing public gatherings. Strong criticism of government policies, electoral decisions and political opponents is a legitimate part of democratic debate. However, the language used by public representatives also shapes political culture and influences the tone of public discourse.
Senior leaders hold positions that carry considerable public responsibility, making restraint and accountability important aspects of political communication. The episode also highlights the importance of examining controversial statements in their full context while maintaining consistent standards of civility across political parties.
The MGMM Outlook
Rajnath Singh’s strong response to Mallikarjun Kharge’s controversial remark about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late father has brought renewed attention to the importance of dignity and responsibility in Indian politics. Singh emphasised that democratic debate allows opposition parties to question government policies and challenge decisions, but personal remarks involving family members should not overshadow substantive political discussions. The incident has prompted BJP leaders to demand an apology, with protests held in several locations. It has also reinforced the importance of maintaining respectful language while addressing the country’s highest public offices.
Political disagreements are an essential part of democracy, but responsible communication by senior leaders can strengthen public trust and preserve the dignity of democratic institutions. Leaders have an opportunity to set an example by focusing their criticism on governance, policies and public issues rather than personal controversies. As the debate continues, maintaining civility and accountability in political discourse remains important to ensuring that public discussions prioritise national interests and the concerns of citizens.
