National Interest Above Politics: Sharad Pawar Backs PM Modi’s Diplomatic Efforts on Global Stage

In a significant display of political maturity, veteran leader and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP-SP) chief Sharad Pawar has asserted that the nation’s honour and prestige must remain above partisan considerations. His remarks come as he openly acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s endeavours to uphold India’s standing during an important five-nation diplomatic tour.

Speaking at a public event organised by the Lakshmanrao Gutte Rural Development Foundation in Pune on Tuesday evening, Pawar emphasised the importance of unity on core national matters. “Prime Minister Modi is working to protect the country’s prestige outside India. We may have different political views, but when it comes to the nation’s honour, political differences should not be brought in,” he stated.

The experienced Maharashtra leader further called upon all political parties to set aside differences and collaborate whenever opportunities arise to strengthen India’s global position. He drew inspiration from former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi, P.V. Narasimha Rao, and Manmohan Singh, who consistently placed the country’s long-term interests and international reputation at the heart of their governance.

PM Modi’s Five-Nation Tour: Focus on Strategic Partnerships

Prime Minister Modi’s tour, spanning May 15 to 20, 2026, includes visits to the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy. The engagements are centred on critical priorities such as energy security, technological collaboration, defence cooperation, trade enhancement, and innovation.

In the UAE, discussions have centred on securing long-term energy supplies amid regional uncertainties. The European leg has seen progress in semiconductor and advanced technology partnerships, notably involving Tata Electronics and Dutch firm ASML, alongside green energy initiatives and strategic dialogues with Nordic countries. In Italy, the visit culminated in the elevation of bilateral ties and forward-looking agreements on trade, defence, and connectivity projects.

These efforts reflect India’s proactive approach to navigating a complex global environment marked by geopolitical tensions and economic challenges, particularly the ongoing West Asia situation affecting energy markets and supply chains.

Diverse Political Perspectives

While Pawar highlighted the value of supporting diplomatic initiatives that benefit the nation, other opposition voices, including Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, have raised questions about the timing of the Prime Minister’s travels. Gandhi noted the contrast with earlier appeals for citizens to exercise caution in foreign travel and resource consumption during the current economic climate.

Such debates underscore the vibrant nature of India’s democratic discourse, where foreign policy actions often invite scrutiny alongside appreciation.

The government has maintained that the tour was essential for safeguarding national interests through forward-looking diplomacy in a period of global volatility. BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi described it as a strategic visit aimed at protecting Indian priorities with wisdom and foresight.

A Call for Bipartisan Consensus

Sharad Pawar’s intervention stands out as a reminder that, despite ideological divides, certain foundational aspects of governance—particularly those concerning India’s place in the world—deserve collective support. His stance reinforces the principle that national interest should transcend routine political rivalries, especially in the realm of foreign policy.

As India continues to expand its global footprint and engage with key partners across regions, voices advocating for unity on strategic matters can contribute to a more cohesive and effective approach to international relations.

The MGMM Outlook

Sharad Pawar’s remarks underline an important democratic value—that while political competition is natural in a vibrant democracy, matters related to India’s global standing should rise above partisan divides. His public support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic outreach reflects a broader recognition that foreign policy and national prestige are collective responsibilities. At a time when India is strengthening its voice on the world stage, such bipartisan acknowledgment sends a powerful message of political maturity and national unity.

PM Modi’s five-nation diplomatic tour highlights India’s growing confidence and strategic intent in global affairs, focusing on energy security, advanced technology, defence cooperation, and stronger international partnerships. As geopolitical uncertainties continue to challenge nations worldwide, India’s proactive engagement with key allies demonstrates a long-term vision aimed at safeguarding national interests and expanding global influence. Voices calling for unity on such strategic priorities reinforce the idea that India’s progress is strongest when national interest remains the common goal.
