Details of the Incident

On May 17, a drone struck an electrical generator outside the inner perimeter of the Barakah plant in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra region, triggering a fire. UAE authorities promptly described the event as an unprovoked terrorist attack. According to the UAE Defence Ministry, three drones approached from the western border direction. Air defence systems successfully intercepted two, while the third caused the limited damage.

Emergency teams quickly brought the fire under control. Officials confirmed that no injuries occurred and there was no impact on radiological safety levels. The plant’s operations continued normally, with one reactor supported by emergency diesel generators. Both the UAE’s Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) verified that radiation levels remained normal and no radioactive material was released.

Significance of the Barakah Nuclear Facility

The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant stands as the Arab world’s first multi-reactor nuclear facility, developed with South Korean technology at an estimated cost of around $20 billion. Operational since 2020, its four reactors supply nearly one-fourth of the UAE’s total electricity needs.
