Modi Government Approves Major National Highway Projects Worth Over ₹24,250 Crore

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved four significant national highway initiatives spanning nearly 728 kilometres. With a combined investment exceeding ₹24,250 crore, these projects aim to enhance connectivity, reduce travel times, ease traffic congestion, and stimulate economic development across Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Bihar.

The initiatives form part of the broader PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, which seeks to integrate various economic and logistic nodes for seamless multimodal transport. By improving road infrastructure, the projects are expected to boost India's Logistics Performance Index, generate employment, lower fuel consumption, and promote safer and more efficient movement of passengers and goods.

Odisha’s New Coastal Highway: A Boost for the Eastern Coast

A highlight of the approvals is the construction of a new greenfield coastal highway from Rameshwar to Paradeep in Odisha. This project, estimated at ₹8,300.79 crore under the Hybrid Annuity Mode, will cover a total length of 160.18 km and be developed in two packages.

The first package involves building a 79.40 km four-lane access-controlled highway from Rameshwar to Konark, while the second package will develop an 80.78 km two-lane road with paved shoulders from Konark to Paradeep. The alignment passes through the districts of Khurda, Puri, Kendrapada, and Jagatsinghpur, with a design speed of 100 kmph.

This new corridor will serve as an effective alternative to the existing congested NH-16 and NH-316 routes. Upon completion, it is anticipated to reduce travel time between Rameshwar and Paradeep by approximately two and a half hours. The highway is poised to significantly support tourism in areas like Puri and Konark, strengthen fishing clusters, pharma industries, special economic zones, and improve access to Paradeep Port and Puri Airport. It will also enhance resilience in the coastal region and foster overall socio-economic growth.

Upgrades in Madhya Pradesh to Improve Regional Connectivity

In Madhya Pradesh, the CCEA has sanctioned the upgradation and widening of two important stretches on NH-347B at a total cost of around ₹4,415 crore under the Hybrid Annuity Mode. These works will address traffic bottlenecks and geometric issues in districts such as Betul, Khandwa, Khargone, and Barwani.

The improvements include converting the Hiwarkhedi-Roshni-Ashapur-Rudhy section from intermediate lane to a two-lane road with paved shoulders (125 km) and widening the Deshgaon-Julwaniya section from two-lane to four-lane (108.6 km). A notable component is the development of a 16.20 km greenfield bypass for Khargone city. These enhancements are expected to benefit local industries, including textile clusters, food parks, and thermal power plants, while providing smoother access to nearby airports in Indore and Nagpur.

Four-Laning Initiatives in Telangana for Smoother Travel

Telangana will witness substantial upgrades with an investment of ₹7,597 crore for widening 190.76 km of key highways across three packages. The project covers the Armoor-Jagtial-Mancherial section of NH-63 and the Jagtial-Karimnagar section of NH-563.

These four-laning efforts are designed to ease congestion in districts including Nizamabad, Jagtial, Mancherial, and Karimnagar. Travel times are projected to decrease notably — by about 1.5 hours on the Armoor-Mancherial route and 45 minutes between Jagtial and Karimnagar — facilitating better economic activity and daily commuting in the region.

Strengthening Connectivity in Bihar

In Bihar, the government has approved the four-laning of the Khagaria-Purnea section along NH-31 and NH-231. Spanning 143.53 km at a cost of ₹3,936 crore under the Build-Operate-Transfer (Toll) mode, the project includes a 6.73 km greenfield bypass for Purnea city.

This upgrade will tackle existing congestion and road deficiencies in Khagaria, Bhagalpur, Katihar, and Purnia districts. Once completed, it is likely to cut travel time by nearly two hours, improving access to important logistic hubs and supporting broader economic integration in eastern India.

The MGMM Outlook

India’s approval of four major national highway projects worth over ₹24,250 crore marks another significant step in strengthening the country’s transport infrastructure under the PM GatiShakti framework. Covering nearly 728 kilometres across Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Bihar, these projects are designed to improve connectivity between key economic centres, ports, industrial clusters, tourism destinations, and logistics hubs. The planned upgrades are expected to reduce travel times, ease congestion on existing routes, enhance road safety, and create new opportunities for regional development while supporting the efficient movement of goods and passengers.

The projects also highlight a broader focus on integrating infrastructure development with economic growth. Odisha’s coastal highway is set to improve access to tourism and maritime assets, while highway expansions in Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Bihar will strengthen connectivity for industries, agriculture, and urban centres. By modernising critical transport corridors and improving access to strategic locations, these initiatives are likely to contribute to employment generation, lower logistics costs, increased investment potential, and stronger economic integration across multiple regions of the country.
