Rolls-Royce CEO Meets PM Modi to Deepen India Expansion Plans

Rolls-Royce Chief Executive Officer Tufan Erginbilgic met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi to discuss plans to significantly expand the British engineering major’s operations in India. The high-level meeting reflects Rolls-Royce’s growing focus on India as a key global market and an increasingly important centre for advanced engineering, manufacturing, and technology development.

During the discussions, Prime Minister Modi welcomed Rolls-Royce’s expansion plans and highlighted India’s rapidly growing talent pool, strong innovation ecosystem, and favourable policy environment. The talks were aligned with the government’s Viksit Bharat vision and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which aim to strengthen India’s position as a global manufacturing and technology powerhouse.

Bengaluru Set to Become Rolls-Royce’s Largest Global Capability Hub

A major focus of the expansion strategy is Rolls-Royce’s Global Capability and Innovation Centre in Bengaluru, which has been scaled up to become the company’s largest such facility worldwide. The centre supports key business areas including civil aerospace, defence, and power systems, and plays a central role in engineering design, digital transformation, and enterprise services for global operations.

The Bengaluru hub is expected to serve as a backbone for advanced product development and complex engineering programmes. By strengthening its India-based capabilities, Rolls-Royce is positioning the country as a core contributor to its global innovation and manufacturing ecosystem rather than just a support location.

Defence and Aerospace Collaboration in Focus

The meeting also explored deeper collaboration in defence and aerospace, sectors that are strategically important for both Rolls-Royce and India. The company’s advanced propulsion systems and power technologies are seen as critical to supporting India’s defence modernisation and indigenous manufacturing goals.

Rolls-Royce has previously expressed interest in expanding its involvement in aircraft engines, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services, and technology partnerships in India. These efforts are aligned with India’s push to localise defence production, strengthen domestic capabilities, and reduce long-term dependence on imports.

Expanding Sourcing and Engineering Talent from India

Beyond physical infrastructure, Rolls-Royce is also increasing its integration with India’s supplier and talent ecosystem. The company has indicated plans to significantly raise sourcing from Indian suppliers over the coming years, embedding Indian companies more deeply into its global supply chain.

India is also becoming a critical talent hub for Rolls-Royce, with thousands of engineers already contributing to global projects. The company views India’s skilled workforce as a strategic advantage in supporting complex engineering, digital innovation, and high-value technology development across its international operations.

India Positioned as a Long-Term “Home Market”

Rolls-Royce leadership has consistently stated that India is being positioned not merely as an offshore centre, but as a long-term “home market.” This reflects a broader shift in how global engineering and aerospace companies view India — as a strategic base for growth, innovation, and high-end manufacturing.

The meeting with Prime Minister Modi reinforces this long-term commitment and highlights the growing alignment between Rolls-Royce’s global strategy and India’s national industrial priorities.

The MGMM Outlook

Rolls-Royce’s engagement with Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlights India’s rising importance as a strategic centre for advanced engineering, manufacturing, and technology. The company’s expansion plans, aligned with initiatives such as Viksit Bharat and Atmanirbhar Bharat, reflect growing confidence in India’s policy environment, innovation ecosystem, and deep talent pool. The decision to scale Bengaluru into Rolls-Royce’s largest global capability and innovation hub underscores India’s shift from being a support base to becoming a core driver of global engineering design, digital transformation, and high-value technology development.

The discussions also signal stronger long-term collaboration in defence and aerospace, supporting India’s push for indigenous manufacturing, localisation, and reduced dependence on imports. Increased sourcing from Indian suppliers and deeper integration of Indian engineers into global programmes further strengthen India’s role in Rolls-Royce’s worldwide operations. Positioning India as a long-term “home market” reflects a broader strategic shift, reinforcing the country’s emergence as a key hub for innovation, advanced manufacturing, and complex engineering within global industrial and aerospace value chains.
