He also encouraged young Indians to think differently, pursue ambitious goals and contribute to the vision of a developed India by 2047.
The visit brought together two essential aspects of national progress: creating modern infrastructure and preparing the next generation to make the most of emerging opportunities. Tamil Nadu's industrial strength, educational institutions and growing urban infrastructure make it an important contributor to India's economic development.

PM Modi Encourages Students to Think Differently
Addressing the golden jubilee celebrations of Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Chennai, the Prime Minister urged students to dream big and approach challenges with confidence. He emphasised the importance of independent thinking, creativity and continuous learning in a world increasingly shaped by technology and innovation.
Modiji encouraged young people to recognise their potential and contribute to the country's long-term development goals. He also highlighted the importance of drawing inspiration from India's cultural heritage while embracing scientific progress and new ideas. His message reinforced the role of education in preparing future generations to become innovators, entrepreneurs and responsible citizens.
Chennai Metro Expansion Improves Urban Connectivity
A key highlight of the visit was the inauguration of the Poonamallee–Vadapalani stretch of Chennai Metro Rail's Phase II project. The approximately 15-kilometre elevated corridor, developed at an estimated cost of ₹4,900 crore, includes 11 stations and is expected to improve connectivity across several parts of the city.
The new section will provide commuters with an additional public transport option, making travel between residential areas, workplaces and commercial centres more convenient. Improved metro connectivity can also help reduce pressure on roads and support more efficient urban mobility as Chennai continues to grow.
The project reflects the wider expansion of modern public transportation across India. Investments in metro networks can improve the daily commuting experience while supporting economic activity and making cities more accessible to residents and visitors.
Investments in Roads, Railways and Ports
Alongside metro development, the projects announced during the visit include improvements to highways, railway infrastructure and port facilities. These investments are expected to strengthen transportation networks, improve logistics and support the movement of goods across Tamil Nadu.
The redevelopment of five railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is another important step towards improving passenger facilities. Meanwhile, port-related developments can support trade and strengthen connections between industries and domestic and international markets. Together, these initiatives aim to improve connectivity and create a stronger foundation for industrial growth.
Strengthening Scientific Research and Innovation
The visit also highlighted India's growing focus on scientific research through the dedication of the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre at IIT Madras. The centre's advanced brain-mapping research aims to improve scientific understanding of the human brain and contribute to future neurological studies.
Investments in research institutions are important for developing new technologies, strengthening India's scientific capabilities and encouraging collaboration among researchers. By supporting education, research and infrastructure together, India can create an environment in which young talent has greater opportunities to pursue scientific and technological advancements.
Supporting Industrial Growth and Employment
Tamil Nadu has an established presence in automobile manufacturing, electronics, engineering and other industrial sectors. Better transportation infrastructure can help businesses move goods more efficiently, connect with suppliers and access wider markets.
Such developments can also create employment opportunities in construction, logistics, engineering, maintenance and related industries. However, long-term benefits will depend on effective project implementation, skill development and the ability of young people to access emerging opportunities. Strengthening vocational training and industry-oriented education will therefore remain essential to ensuring that economic growth translates into meaningful employment.
