PM Modi Unveils ₹830 Crore Development Push in West Bengal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for a series of major development projects worth over ₹830 crore in West Bengal, reaffirming the Union government’s focus on infrastructure-led growth in eastern India. The projects, launched from Singur in Hooghly district, span railways, logistics, inland waterways, and urban mobility, and are aimed at enhancing connectivity, economic efficiency, and employment opportunities across the state.
The initiatives form part of a broader national strategy to integrate West Bengal more closely with India’s expanding transport and trade networks, while also addressing long-standing infrastructure gaps in the region.
Railway Expansion to Improve Regional and National Links
Rail connectivity emerged as a key focus of the development package. The Prime Minister inaugurated the Jayrambati–Barogopinathpur–Maynapur rail line, a project that is expected to significantly improve travel and accessibility in Bankura and surrounding districts. This rail corridor is designed to ease passenger movement and support regional economic activity by connecting smaller towns with major rail routes.
In addition, three Amrit Bharat Express trains were flagged off, linking West Bengal with major urban centres such as Delhi, Varanasi, and Chennai. These services are aimed at providing faster and more comfortable long-distance travel, while strengthening West Bengal’s role as a critical junction within India’s national railway network.
Balagarh Port Project to Boost Logistics and Trade
A major infrastructure milestone announced during the event was the foundation stone laying for the Extended Port Gate System at Balagarh in Hooghly district. Spread across nearly 900 acres, the project is envisioned as a modern multimodal logistics hub integrating inland water transport, road connectivity, and cargo-handling facilities.
Once operational, the Balagarh facility is expected to handle approximately 2.7 million tonnes of cargo annually. By diverting freight movement away from congested urban areas, the project aims to reduce logistical bottlenecks around Kolkata, lower transportation costs, and enhance the efficiency of supply chains across eastern India.
Promoting Sustainable Inland Water Transport
As part of the broader infrastructure push, the Prime Minister also inaugurated a state-of-the-art electric catamaran in Kolkata. Designed for passenger transport along the Hooghly River, the vessel reflects the government’s emphasis on environmentally sustainable mobility solutions.
The introduction of electric and hybrid watercraft is expected to encourage greater use of river transport for both commuting and tourism, while reducing carbon emissions and easing pressure on road networks in urban areas.
Development Amid a Charged Political Landscape
The announcement of these projects comes at a politically significant time, with West Bengal heading toward Assembly elections later this year. Development, infrastructure, and connectivity have increasingly become central themes in the state’s political discourse. Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister highlighted the role of central government initiatives in driving regional growth and improving the quality of life for citizens.
He emphasized that investments in railways, ports, and waterways are not merely construction projects, but long-term assets that create employment, attract private investment, and support sustained economic progress.
