India to Host the 5th Coast Guard Global Summit in Chennai in 2027

India is set to host the 5th Coast Guard Global Summit (CGGS) in Chennai in 2027, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). The decision was made during the 4th CGGS held in Rome on September 11–12, 2025, with delegates from 115 countries and international organizations in attendance.

Significance of the 2027 Summit

The 2027 summit will feature an International Coast Guard Fleet Review and a World Coast Guard Seminar. These events aim to enhance cross-border collaboration and advance dialogue on maritime security and cooperation. Director General of the ICG, Paramesh Sivamani, emphasized that no single nation can address maritime challenges alone, highlighting the importance of fostering interoperability, trust, and cooperation among Coast Guards globally.


Strengthening Global Maritime Cooperation

The summit will focus on common maritime threats and aim to build consensus around shared responses. The planned events are expected to strengthen international coordination and support knowledge-sharing to better address evolving security and environmental issues at sea.


Bilateral Collaborations

At the Rome summit, DG Sivamani formally took over the CGGS Presidency from the Italian Coast Guard, thanking both Italy for hosting and Japan for its continued role as the CGGS Secretariat. He described the summit as a key mechanism for enhancing global Coast Guard cooperation. On the sidelines of the Rome meeting, DG Sivamani held bilateral talks with the Commandant of the Italian Coast Guard. Their discussions focused on operational collaboration under the India–Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025–2029, including maritime search and rescue (M-SAR), pollution response, environmental protection, information-sharing, maritime crime prevention, and capacity building.

DG Sivamani, who formally assumed the CGGS Presidency from Italy, engaged in bilateral discussions on operational cooperation with the Italian Coast Guard, covering areas such as maritime search and rescue, environmental protection, pollution response, information-sharing, and maritime crime prevention. Hosting the summit reinforces India’s commitment to global maritime security and positions it as a key player in fostering international collaboration among Coast Guards.
