Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Punjab on July 17 to inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for major National Highway projects valued at Rs 5,278 crore. These initiatives aim to significantly enhance connectivity, ease traffic congestion in the Chandigarh Tricity area, and promote economic development across the region.
The package reflects the government’s continued focus on modernising transport infrastructure under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, promising smoother travel, improved safety, and new opportunities for growth in Punjab and neighbouring states.

Strategic Importance of the Projects
The Rs 5,278 crore investment targets long-standing traffic challenges in the Tricity region, where heavy commercial and inter-state traffic has strained major roads for years. By creating dedicated bypasses and greenfield corridors, the projects will separate local traffic from transit movement, reducing pressure on internal city routes and benefiting residents of Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula, and Zirakpur.
These highways are expected to improve travel times, enhance road safety, boost fuel efficiency, and support seamless freight movement. Ultimately, they will strengthen economic ties, lower logistics costs, and attract greater investment, tourism, and industrial activity across Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir.
Key Highway Initiatives
The package comprises three major components that form vital links in the broader Tricity mobility network.
The Zirakpur-Kurali Greenfield Highway, a 31.23-km six-lane expressway built at a cost of Rs 1,936 crore, is now complete and ready for inauguration. This corridor will substantially reduce travel time between Zirakpur and Kurali while providing better access to Punjab’s interior regions and bypassing congested urban stretches.
Prime Minister Modi will also lay the foundation stone for the Zirakpur Bypass, a 19.20-km six-lane project estimated at Rs 1,878 crore. Designed to divert long-distance traffic away from densely populated areas, the bypass will connect NH-7 (Zirakpur-Patiala) with NH-5 (Zirakpur-Parwanoo), offering much-needed relief to daily commuters.
The third component is the Chandigarh Airport-Aerocity Greenfield Highway, a 10.30-km extension of NH-205A costing Rs 1,464 crore. This corridor will strengthen connectivity between Chandigarh International Airport, Mohali’s Aerocity, and expanding urban clusters, supporting the region’s rapid growth.
Part of the Visionary Tricity Ring Road Network
These projects are integral to the larger Tricity Ring Road initiative, an ambitious 244-km orbital network with an overall investment exceeding Rs 12,000 crore. The ring road aims to create a comprehensive system that redirects through-traffic around urban cores, transforming mobility in the region. Several related sections of the Chandigarh-Ambala Greenfield Corridor are already progressing well or operational, demonstrating steady advancement in the overall plan.
Together, these developments will foster integrated regional growth, aligning with national goals for efficient and sustainable infrastructure.
The MGMM Outlook
The Rs 5,278 crore infrastructure package for Punjab’s Tricity region reflects a broader vision of building transport networks that support both economic growth and improved quality of life. By investing in greenfield highways, bypasses, and better airport connectivity, the government is addressing long-standing congestion while creating faster and safer routes for commuters, businesses, and freight movement. These projects also align with the PM Gati Shakti initiative, which seeks to integrate infrastructure planning and strengthen regional connectivity across northern India.
As the Tricity Ring Road network continues to take shape, these highway projects have the potential to transform Punjab into a stronger logistics and investment hub. Improved connectivity between Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir can encourage industrial expansion, tourism, and trade while reducing transportation costs. Such large-scale infrastructure investments demonstrate a continued emphasis on long-term development, positioning the region to benefit from greater economic opportunities and more efficient mobility in the years ahead.
