PM Modi, Liechtenstein’s Prince Alois Hold Talks to Strengthen Trade and Economic Ties
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with Hereditary Prince Alois of Liechtenstein in New Delhi on October 27, 2026, to explore new opportunities for strengthening relations between India and the European principality. The discussions focused on trade and investment, advanced manufacturing, technology, innovation and people-to-people exchanges.
The visit comes as India seeks to deepen its economic engagement with European partners under the India–European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA). With the agreement in force since October 2025, the talks provide an opportunity to build stronger commercial partnerships and explore new avenues for investment and technological cooperation.

India and Liechtenstein Explore New Areas of Cooperation
During their meeting in New Delhi, Prime Minister Modi and Prince Alois discussed ways to expand bilateral cooperation across key economic and technological sectors. The engagement highlighted the potential for closer collaboration between Indian businesses and Liechtenstein’s specialised industries.
Advanced manufacturing, financial services, science and technology, innovation, education and skill development offer promising areas for further engagement. Stronger business connections and institutional partnerships could help companies from both countries explore new markets, exchange expertise and develop commercially beneficial relationships.
The visit also reflects the importance of sustained diplomatic engagement in supporting economic cooperation. By strengthening dialogue at the leadership level, India and Liechtenstein can work towards identifying shared priorities and translating them into practical initiatives.
India–EFTA Trade Agreement Opens Investment Opportunities
The India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement provides an important framework for expanding economic relations between India and Liechtenstein, alongside Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. Signed on March 10, 2024, the agreement came into force on October 1, 2025, following years of negotiations.
Under the agreement, the EFTA countries have committed to aiming for $100 billion in foreign direct investment in India over 15 years, with the objective of facilitating one million direct jobs through these investments. The pact also seeks to improve market access, facilitate trade in goods and services, and strengthen cooperation in areas such as intellectual property and investment promotion.
For India, the agreement creates opportunities to attract investment, strengthen manufacturing capabilities and expand exports to European markets. For Liechtenstein, it provides a framework to explore business opportunities in India's large and growing economy. Effective implementation and stronger commercial partnerships will be important to realising these opportunities.
Technology and Advanced Manufacturing in Focus
Technology and advanced manufacturing remain important areas for potential cooperation between the two countries. Liechtenstein has established expertise in precision engineering, specialised industrial products and manufacturing, while India is expanding its domestic manufacturing base and technology ecosystem.
Closer collaboration could create opportunities for industrial innovation, research, skills development and business partnerships. Cooperation in financial services and education could further strengthen economic links and encourage the exchange of knowledge and expertise. Such partnerships could also support India's broader efforts to attract international investment, develop advanced industrial capabilities and strengthen its position in global supply chains.
High-Level Visit Strengthens Diplomatic Relations
Prince Alois’s visit to India from October 25 to 28, 2026, included several diplomatic engagements. President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Modi welcomed the visiting Prince and Hereditary Princess Sophie at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The royal couple also paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Prince Alois to discuss bilateral relations and opportunities for closer cooperation. The engagements highlighted the importance of maintaining strong diplomatic connections while pursuing shared economic and technological objectives.
India and Liechtenstein established diplomatic relations in 1993. The current visit builds on this longstanding relationship and provides an opportunity to expand engagement in trade, investment and emerging technologies. Prince Alois had also visited New Delhi in February 2026 to participate in the AI Impact Summit.
The MGMM Outlook
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Hereditary Prince Alois of Liechtenstein on October 27, 2026, highlights India’s continued efforts to strengthen economic and diplomatic ties with European partners. The India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, which came into force in October 2025, provides a framework for enhancing commercial partnerships, attracting foreign investment and creating employment opportunities.
