Kiren Rijiju Demands Congress Apology After Army Debunks Fake AI Videos on China Border Claims

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has criticised the Congress party and demanded an apology after the Indian Army debunked misleading social media videos alleging Chinese incursions into Indian territory. The controversy centres on two videos that circulated online, including one that falsely attributed statements about China's alleged control of areas in Arunachal Pradesh to a senior Indian Army officer.

The incident has renewed concerns about the misuse of artificial intelligence to create deceptive content related to national security. The Army's clarifications have also intensified the political debate over the responsibility of public representatives and political parties when sharing sensitive information about India's borders and armed forces.

Indian Army Exposes Manipulated Video on Arunachal Pradesh

One of the viral videos allegedly featured Lieutenant General Girish Kalia discussing claims that Chinese forces had taken control of Asaphila, Longju and Taksing Circle in Arunachal Pradesh. The clip also suggested that Indian soldiers deployed along the frontier were facing restrictions on essential supplies.

The Indian Army rejected the claims, explaining that the video had been digitally manipulated using AI-generated lip-syncing and voice cloning. The original footage was from a press briefing held in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir, on October 27, 2023, when Kalia discussed counter-infiltration operations along the Line of Control. His actual remarks did not include the statements attributed to him in the viral clip.

The clarification highlights how genuine military footage can be altered to create false narratives. By combining authentic images with fabricated audio and modified lip movements, misleading videos can appear credible and potentially influence public understanding of sensitive security matters.

Army Clarifies Claims About Chinese Vehicles at Nathu La

Another video showed Chinese commercial vehicles near Nathu La Pass in Sikkim and was circulated with claims suggesting that Chinese vehicles had entered Indian territory without authorisation.

The Army clarified that the footage showed commercial vehicles operating at an authorised India-China border trade point. Nathu La facilitates regulated cross-border trade under established arrangements between the two countries. Presenting the footage as evidence of an unauthorised intrusion therefore misrepresented the circumstances shown in the video.

The incident demonstrates how authentic footage can become misleading when its location, purpose or context is deliberately misrepresented. It also reinforces the importance of verifying the original source of videos before drawing conclusions about developments along India's international borders.

Rijiju Calls for an Apology from Congress

Following the Army's clarifications, Rijiju demanded that Congress apologise to the nation for circulating misleading material concerning the armed forces and India's territorial security. Other BJP leaders also criticised the incident, arguing that political parties must exercise caution when sharing unverified information about military operations and border developments.

The controversy has brought the responsibilities of political representatives into focus. Public statements concerning national security can influence public opinion, particularly when they involve allegations of territorial losses or shortcomings in military preparedness.

At the same time, the political debate surrounding the videos should be distinguished from the facts established by the Army's clarifications. The manipulated video did not provide reliable evidence that China had taken control of the areas mentioned in it. Any broader discussion about border security must be based on independently verifiable information rather than fabricated statements attributed to military officers.

Growing Threat of AI-Generated Misinformation

The episode illustrates the challenges posed by increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence tools. Voice cloning, synthetic audio and manipulated videos can make it appear that military officers, government officials or public figures have made statements they never delivered.

Such content can create unnecessary alarm, damage reputations and weaken public confidence in credible information. When false claims concern territorial integrity or the safety of deployed soldiers, the consequences can be particularly serious.

The incident also highlights the need for greater digital awareness among social media users. Checking official military clarifications, locating original recordings and consulting credible news organisations can help prevent misleading content from spreading. Although manipulated videos may be circulated for political or other purposes, identifying the individuals or organisations responsible requires evidence beyond the content of the videos themselves.

The MGMM Outlook

The controversy over the AI-generated videos has highlighted the growing threat of misinformation surrounding India’s national security. The Indian Army clarified that a viral video attributed false statements to Lieutenant General Girish Kalia through manipulated audio and lip-syncing, while footage of Chinese commercial vehicles at Nathu La was misrepresented as an unauthorised intrusion. Following these clarifications, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju demanded an apology from Congress for circulating misleading material. Such incidents underline the importance of protecting the credibility of India’s armed forces and ensuring that sensitive border-related issues are discussed on the basis of verified facts rather than fabricated claims.

As artificial intelligence makes it easier to create convincing fake videos and audio recordings, responsible communication has become increasingly important for political leaders, media organisations and social media users. Unverified claims about territorial security can create unnecessary public alarm and distort the understanding of developments along India’s borders. Verifying original footage, consulting official statements and checking credible news sources are essential steps in preventing the spread of misinformation. Safeguarding national security also requires safeguarding the information environment, ensuring that fabricated content does not undermine public trust in the armed forces or mislead citizens about matters concerning India’s territorial integrity.
