On June 5, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the ambitious Aravalli Green Wall Project by planting a Sindoor sapling at his residence in New Delhi. This initiative, part of the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign, aims to rejuvenate the ancient Aravalli mountain range, which spans approximately 700 kilometers across Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.
Project Overview
The Aravalli Green Wall Project seeks to establish a continuous green belt, five kilometers wide, covering 6.45 million hectares across 29 districts in the aforementioned states. The primary objectives include combating desertification, restoring degraded lands, and preventing the eastward expansion of the Thar Desert.

In its first phase, the state of Haryana plans to restore 24,990 hectares of degraded forest land across five districts: Gurgaon, Faridabad, Nuh, Rewari, and Mahendergarh. This restoration will involve soil and water conservation measures, followed by the planting of 15–20 native vegetation species tailored to local conditions.
Environmental Significance
The Aravalli range, one of the oldest mountain ranges globally, plays a crucial role in acting as a natural barrier against desertification and supporting biodiversity. However, it has faced significant environmental challenges due to deforestation, illegal mining, and urbanization. The Green Wall Project aims to address these issues by restoring the ecological balance and enhancing the region's resilience to climate change.
Additionally, the project will contribute to India's commitments under various international conventions such as the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Community Engagement and Monitoring
Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance of community participation in environmental conservation. He encouraged citizens, especially the youth, to actively engage in tree plantation drives and adopt sustainable practices. To ensure transparency and effective monitoring, all plantation activities will be geo-tagged and tracked through the 'Meri LiFE' portal.
In Haryana, the state has appointed 'Van Mitras' to raise awareness among the younger generation about the importance of protecting nature and fostering sustainable practices. These Van Mitras are also working to strengthen local engagement with forest conservation efforts, enhancing both ecological balance and community resilience.
Broader Environmental Initiatives
In addition to the Aravalli Green Wall Project, various states have launched complementary environmental initiatives. For instance, Gujarat has initiated projects focused on reducing single-use plastic and promoting sustainable habits among citizens. These efforts include the installation of cloth bag vending machines and plastic bottle crushers across the state.
The launch of the Aravalli Green Wall Project marks a significant step in India's commitment to environmental restoration and sustainable development. By integrating ecological conservation with community participation, the initiative aims to create a greener and more resilient future.
