Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar to participate in Israel’s next Independence Day celebrations, recognising the courage displayed by the Indian pilot during a dramatic mid-air attack aboard a flydubai flight.

The invitation came during Netanyahu’s conversation with Machchhar, who was recovering from injuries sustained when his co-pilot allegedly attacked him inside the cockpit. Netanyahu praised the captain’s bravery and described him as a hero of Israel, India and the wider world. He also proposed that Machchhar and PM Modi take part in the traditional torch-lighting ceremony marking Israel’s Independence Day.

Captain Machchhar’s Courage During the Flight

The incident occurred aboard flydubai Flight FZ1073, which was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv with 174 people on board. During the flight, the Omani co-pilot allegedly attacked Captain Machchhar inside the cockpit, leaving the Indian pilot seriously injured.

Despite being wounded, Machchhar remained focused on the safety of the aircraft and its passengers. Reports indicate that the aircraft experienced a rapid descent during the crisis before the situation was brought under control. The flight was eventually diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.

Machchhar’s actions were particularly significant because the cockpit had become the centre of the emergency. Despite his injuries, he managed to open the cockpit door, allowing people outside to enter and intervene. Two reserve pilots who were travelling on the aircraft subsequently helped take control of the situation.

Pilot Recalls the Moments of Crisis

Machchhar later spoke about the incident during a conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi while recovering in a hospital in Abu Dhabi. He explained that the co-pilot had initially indicated that he wanted to pray. The situation changed suddenly when Machchhar was attacked from behind.

Although seriously injured, the captain understood that the aircraft was descending and that immediate action was required. He continued trying to regain control of the cockpit situation and eventually succeeded in opening the door. His actions gave the crew and others on board an opportunity to intervene.

The aircraft was then safely brought under control and diverted to Saudi Arabia. The fact that all passengers survived the incident has brought considerable attention to Machchhar’s presence of mind and determination during the emergency.

PM Modi Praises the Indian Pilot

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also praised Captain Machchhar for his courage and determination. During his interaction with the injured pilot, Modiji expressed concern for his recovery and highlighted the importance of the captain’s actions in protecting the lives of everyone aboard the aircraft.

The recognition from India's Prime Minister was followed by Netanyahu’s personal conversation with Machchhar. The Israeli Prime Minister expressed admiration for the pilot’s courage and extended the invitation for him and PM Modi to participate in Israel’s Independence Day celebrations.

The gesture has also highlighted the strong people-to-people dimension of India-Israel relations, with the bravery of an Indian citizen receiving recognition at the highest levels of leadership.

Netanyahu’s Independence Day Invitation

Netanyahu proposed that Machchhar and Prime Minister Modi light a ceremonial torch during Israel’s Independence Day celebrations. The torch-lighting ceremony is an important part of the country’s Independence Day observances and is traditionally associated with individuals recognised for their contributions and achievements.

Netanyahu’s invitation represents a significant personal recognition of Machchhar’s actions. However, the formal selection of torch-lighters follows an established process in Israel, meaning the invitation itself is not necessarily the final confirmation of participation.

For Machchhar, the proposed honour comes after an incident in which his courage under extraordinary circumstances helped prevent what could have become a major aviation disaster.

Investigation Into the Cockpit Attack

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack. The co-pilot, an Omani national, was detained following the emergency landing and the case has drawn attention to questions surrounding his background, recruitment and alleged motive.

Reports have indicated that investigators are examining whether the attack was planned in advance. Authorities are also looking into the circumstances under which the co-pilot was recruited and cleared to operate the flight. The investigation remains ongoing, and several details surrounding the motive and planning of the incident are yet to be conclusively established.

A Story of Courage and Responsibility

The incident has brought Captain Smit Machchhar international recognition not because of a ceremonial title, but because of the responsibility he demonstrated when confronted with an extraordinary threat. Even after being seriously injured, his attention remained focused on the aircraft and the people on board.

The response also involved the passengers, cabin crew and reserve pilots who helped bring the emergency under control. Together, their actions prevented the situation from developing into a much greater tragedy.

The MGMM Outlook

The invitation extended by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Captain Smit Machchhar for Israel’s Independence Day celebrations is a significant recognition of courage and professional responsibility. Machchhar demonstrated remarkable composure during the flydubai emergency after he was allegedly attacked by his co-pilot, continuing to focus on the safety of 174 people aboard the aircraft despite sustaining serious injuries. His actions, along with the assistance of other crew members and reserve pilots, helped bring the situation under control and enabled the aircraft to land safely in Saudi Arabia.

The proposed torch-lighting honour also highlights how acts of courage can create a wider bond between people and nations. Prime Minister Modi’s appreciation of Machchhar and Netanyahu’s personal recognition of his bravery place the Indian pilot’s actions on an international platform. Beyond the ceremonial recognition, the incident underlines the importance of professional training, presence of mind and responsibility during extreme emergencies, while the ongoing investigation into the cockpit attack will help establish the circumstances and motive behind the incident.
