Prime Minister Narendra Modi began a two-day visit to Assam, announcing and inaugurating development projects worth over ₹47,800 crore across the state. The large-scale initiative focuses on improving transportation, energy infrastructure, and economic opportunities in the region. With key events held in cities such as Kokrajhar, Guwahati, and Silchar, the visit highlights the government’s continued focus on accelerating growth and connectivity in India’s northeastern states.
These projects span sectors including roads, railways, waterways, and energy, aiming to strengthen both local infrastructure and regional connectivity. By investing heavily in strategic projects, the government seeks to integrate the Northeast more closely with the rest of the country while creating new opportunities for trade, tourism, and employment.

Major Railway and Transportation Initiatives
A significant portion of the development package focuses on expanding railway infrastructure and improving connectivity. During the visit, the Prime Minister flagged off several new train services, including the Kamakhya–Charlapalli Amrit Bharat Express, the Guwahati–New Jalpaiguri Express, and the Narangi–Agartala Express. These services are expected to improve rail travel across the Northeast and enhance connectivity with other regions of India.
The foundation stone was also laid for a Periodic Overhauling railway workshop at Bashbari in the Bodoland Territorial Region. This facility will strengthen railway maintenance operations and is expected to generate employment opportunities for the local population. Additionally, the proposed doubling of the Furkating–Tinsukia railway line will increase railway capacity, enabling smoother passenger and freight movement across Assam.
Boost to Energy Infrastructure and Industrial Growth
Energy infrastructure also received a major boost during the visit. The Prime Minister dedicated the 150-MW Kopili Hydropower Project to the nation, which will help strengthen the region’s electricity supply. Another key initiative includes the capacity expansion of the Numaligarh–Siliguri pipeline, supporting the growing operations of the Numaligarh Refinery and improving fuel distribution across the region.
In addition, Phase-1 of the North East Gas Grid was inaugurated, connecting important locations such as Guwahati, Numaligarh, Gohpur, and Itanagar, with an extension to Dimapur. This project is expected to improve access to natural gas for industries, households, and transportation, contributing to cleaner energy use and economic development across the Northeast.
Expanding Roads, Waterways, and Urban Infrastructure
Road infrastructure and inland waterways also form an important part of the development push. Several highway projects were announced under the Assam Mala road development initiative, aimed at strengthening the state’s road network through the construction of new highways, bridges, and flyovers.
In Guwahati, new infrastructure related to inland waterways was launched, including the construction of an approach road connecting Pandu Port to National Highway-27. The foundation stones for cruise terminals at Bishwanath Ghat and Neamati were also laid, which are expected to boost tourism and river-based transport along the Brahmaputra.
Urban mobility and tourism infrastructure are also being improved through projects such as a ropeway connecting Kamakhya Railway Station to the famous Kamakhya Temple. This ropeway will make travel easier for pilgrims and tourists visiting one of the most important religious sites in the region.
The MGMM Outlook
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Assam and the announcement of projects worth ₹47,800 crore signals a major push toward strengthening the infrastructure backbone of India’s Northeast. Large investments in railways, highways, waterways, and energy networks highlight the government’s focus on reducing the long-standing connectivity gap between the region and the rest of the country. New train services and railway infrastructure developments are expected to improve transportation efficiency, support trade, and create employment opportunities for local communities while encouraging greater economic integration.
At the same time, projects such as the Kopili Hydropower Project, expansion of the Numaligarh Refinery pipeline network, and the development of the North East Gas Grid represent an effort to strengthen the region’s energy security and industrial growth. Along with road expansion under the Assam Mala initiative and tourism-focused projects like improved access to the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, these initiatives collectively aim to stimulate economic activity, promote tourism, and bring sustained development to the Northeast while connecting it more closely to India’s broader economic landscape.
