Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and launched a series of development projects worth over ₹5,450 crore in Assam, marking one of the most significant infrastructure pushes in the state in recent months. The initiatives span urban mobility, river connectivity, digital infrastructure, and higher education, reflecting a comprehensive development strategy for the Northeastern region.
The announcements were made during a public event in Guwahati, underscoring the government’s continued focus on accelerating economic growth and modernizing infrastructure in Assam and neighboring states.

Expansion of Electric Public Transport in Guwahati
A key highlight of the visit was the flagging off of 200 electric buses under the PM e-Bus Sewa initiative. Of these, 100 buses will operate in Guwahati, while the remaining buses will serve cities such as Bhavnagar and Nagpur. The introduction of these buses represents a major step toward strengthening clean and sustainable urban mobility in Assam.
Electric buses are expected to reduce air pollution, lower fuel dependency, and provide affordable transport options for thousands of daily commuters. With this deployment, Guwahati joins the growing list of Indian cities adopting large-scale electric public transport systems as part of the country’s broader climate and sustainability goals.
Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu: Transforming Brahmaputra Connectivity
Among the most prominent infrastructure projects inaugurated was the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu, a six-lane extradosed bridge constructed over the Brahmaputra River. Built at an estimated cost of around ₹3,030 crore, the bridge connects Guwahati with North Guwahati, significantly improving transportation across the river.
The new bridge is designed to reduce travel time between the two sides to approximately seven minutes, easing traffic congestion and supporting regional commerce. Given Assam’s seismic sensitivity, advanced engineering features such as seismic resilience systems and a Bridge Health Monitoring System have been integrated to ensure long-term structural safety. The bridge stands as a landmark achievement in Northeast India’s infrastructure development.
Strengthening Digital Infrastructure with National Data Centre
Another major initiative launched during the visit was the establishment of a National Data Centre in Amingaon, located in Kamrup district. The facility is designed to host critical government applications and serve as a disaster recovery centre for other national data centres across India.
The data centre is expected to strengthen the digital backbone of the Northeastern region by ensuring secure storage, faster data processing, and improved delivery of e-governance services. The project aligns with the broader Digital India vision and aims to enhance technological capacity and resilience in the region.
IIM Guwahati: A Milestone for Higher Education
The inauguration of the Indian Institute of Management Guwahati marks a significant expansion of management education opportunities in the Northeast. As the second IIM in the region after Indian Institute of Management Shillong, the new institution is expected to attract students from across India and contribute to academic excellence in the state.
The establishment of IIM Guwahati reflects the government’s focus on strengthening higher education infrastructure and creating new avenues for skill development, entrepreneurship, and research in Assam.
A Broader Vision for Northeast Development
The projects launched during the Prime Minister’s visit collectively represent a multi-sector development approach encompassing transportation, connectivity, digital infrastructure, and education. Together, they aim to stimulate economic growth, generate employment, improve urban living standards, and integrate Assam more closely with national development goals.
By combining modern engineering, clean energy initiatives, and institutional expansion, the government has positioned these projects as catalysts for long-term transformation in the region.
The MGMM Outlook
The launch of infrastructure projects worth ₹5,450 crore by Narendra Modi reflects a strong push toward transforming Assam into a more connected, modern, and economically vibrant region. Initiatives such as electric buses in Guwahati, the construction of the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu over the Brahmaputra River, and the establishment of a National Data Centre indicate a development model that combines sustainability, technology, and infrastructure expansion. These projects are likely to improve mobility, reduce pollution, and strengthen governance through digital capacity, while also enhancing regional trade and connectivity across the state.
The inauguration of Indian Institute of Management Guwahati further signals an emphasis on long-term human capital development alongside physical infrastructure. Expanding educational opportunities in the Northeast can help create skilled professionals, encourage entrepreneurship, and reduce regional disparities by attracting national attention and investment. Together, these initiatives highlight an integrated approach where transportation, education, and digital systems act as catalysts for economic growth, employment generation, and improved quality of life across Assam and the wider Northeastern region.
