India Approves Major Strategic Upgrade of Tezpur Air Force Station in Assam

The Government of India has approved a significant upgrade of the Tezpur Air Force Station (AFS) in Assam, marking another decisive step in strengthening the country’s defence posture along its eastern borders. The decision, formalised through a gazette notification dated December 30, 2025, authorises the acquisition of 382.82 acres of private land in Bokajan village of Sonitpur district to expand and modernise the base. Why Tezpur Air Force Station Is Strategically Critical

Tezpur AFS, also known as Salonibari Air Force Station, is one of the most crucial forward bases of the Indian Air Force’s Eastern Air Command. Located roughly 150–200 kilometres from the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, the base enables rapid air mobilisation, surveillance, and force projection across the northeastern sector. Its strategic importance has grown substantially in recent years, especially following the Galwan Valley clashes of 2020, which underscored the need for robust air and ground readiness along India’s northern and eastern frontiers.
