Japan and India Deepen Strategic Partnership: $12.5 Billion Investment Push Marks PM Sanae Takaichi’s First Visit

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s first official visit to India has ushered in a significant milestone in bilateral relations. During the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Japanese companies announced major investments worth approximately $12.5 billion (around 2 trillion yen) through nearly 120 cooperation agreements. This development highlights the growing confidence of Japanese industry in India’s dynamic economy and the shared vision for long-term collaboration.

A Major Investment Push Across Key Sectors

The fresh investments span critical areas including semiconductors, artificial intelligence, clean energy, mobility, manufacturing, and infrastructure. These sectors align closely with both nations’ priorities for technological advancement and sustainable growth.

Over 150 Japanese companies participated in the parallel Japan-India Economic Forum, creating a vibrant platform for business-to-business engagement. Notable collaborations include Fujifilm’s work on semiconductor materials, Suzuki’s biogas projects, and joint AI application development between startups from both countries. Additional initiatives, such as large-scale hydrogen and ammonia production ventures and R&D facilities for advanced air conditioning and data centres, further illustrate the depth of private sector commitment.

This latest wave builds upon Japan’s ambitious target of 10 trillion yen (approximately $67–70 billion) in private investments in India over the next decade. Japan already ranks as one of India’s top investors, with cumulative foreign direct investment surpassing $48 billion and around 1,400–1,500 Japanese firms operating across the country, many in manufacturing. Bilateral trade reached about $27.5 billion in FY 2025-26, supported by steady investment inflows.

Advancing Economic Security and Supply Chain Resilience

Both leaders emphasized cooperation in economic security, resilient supply chains, and emerging technologies. Against the backdrop of global uncertainties, the two sides are working together on critical minerals, where India holds substantial reserves, and exploring joint stockpiling measures to enhance energy security. Discussions also covered potential frameworks for Rupee-Yen trade settlements to facilitate smoother economic exchanges.

These efforts reflect a strategic approach to diversifying supply chains and promoting mutual self-reliance in vital sectors such as semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, batteries, and clean energy. The partnership leverages India’s growing innovation ecosystem and Japan’s advanced technological expertise to create robust, future-ready industrial capabilities.

Deepening Strategic and Defence Cooperation

The summit provided an opportunity to review and advance the Special Strategic and Global Partnership established in 2014. Maritime security, defence technology collaboration, and the upcoming Foreign and Defence Ministerial (2+2) dialogue featured prominently on the agenda. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, promoting stability and prosperity across the region.

Infrastructure projects in India’s Northeast, including industrial value chains connecting to Bangladesh and ASEAN, add an important dimension to connectivity and regional development. These initiatives promise to boost economic opportunities while strengthening broader strategic alignment.

People-to-People Ties and Long-Term Vision

Beyond government and business engagements, the relationship benefits from growing people-to-people exchanges. Plans to facilitate mobility for hundreds of thousands of professionals underscore the human dimension of this partnership. Cultural affinities and shared democratic values continue to serve as a strong foundation.

The MGMM Outlook

The outcomes of the India-Japan Annual Summit reflect a relationship that has evolved beyond traditional diplomacy into a comprehensive partnership focused on long-term economic growth, technological innovation, and strategic cooperation. The announcement of nearly $12.5 billion in fresh investments across sectors such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, clean energy, mobility, and advanced manufacturing demonstrates Japan's growing confidence in India's economic trajectory. These initiatives, supported by extensive business-to-business collaborations, reinforce both countries' commitment to building resilient industries, fostering innovation, and creating sustainable opportunities for future growth.

The summit also underscores the increasing strategic importance of India-Japan cooperation in an evolving global landscape. Strengthening supply chain resilience, critical minerals partnerships, defence collaboration, Indo-Pacific security, and regional connectivity reflects a shared vision for stability and economic security. Combined with expanding people-to-people exchanges and deeper institutional engagement, these developments position India and Japan as trusted partners capable of addressing emerging global challenges while advancing prosperity, technological leadership, and regional peace.
