Jal Jeevan Mission: Transforming Lives in Bundelkhand

The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019, aims to provide safe and adequate drinking water through individual household tap connections by 2024 to all households in rural India. In the drought-prone region of Bundelkhand, this mission has brought about significant changes, impacting health, education, and migration patterns.

Health Improvements

A study conducted by Bundelkhand University across 70 villages in seven districts highlights the transformative impact of JJM on rural Bundelkhand. The consistent availability of clean tap water has led to notable enhancements in public health, reducing the incidence of waterborne diseases. Women trained in using Field Test Kits (FTKs) are ensuring access to clean drinking water, further contributing to improved health outcomes.


According to Uttar Pradesh's Jal Shakti Minister, Swatantra Dev Singh, cases of waterborne diseases have drastically decreased from 4.43 lakh in 2019 to a mere 7,000 in 2024.


Educational Advancements

With the burden of fetching water reduced, children, especially girls, have more time to attend school. The availability of water in schools has also improved hygiene and sanitation, creating a better learning environment.


Teachers and students reported improvements in hygiene, availability of drinking water during school hours, and better attendance. As young girls are no longer burdened with the job of fetching water, families are now more inclined to send them to school.


Reduction in Migration

The improved water supply has positively impacted agriculture, leading to better livelihoods. This development has reduced the need for seasonal migration, as families can now sustain themselves in their native villages.


Empowerment of Women

The mission has empowered women by involving them in water quality testing and management. Women who earlier spent hours daily fetching water are now participating in various jobs, including agriculture, animal husbandry, tailoring, poultry, and other income-generating activities. These engagements have increased household incomes and empowered women in decision-making within their families.


Five women from Bundelkhand shared their experiences at the UN House in New Delhi, highlighting the mission's impact on their lives and communities.


Cultural Recognition

The transformation brought about by JJM in Bundelkhand was showcased at Mahakumbh 2025, where initiatives like 'Swachh Sujal Gaon' highlighted the importance of clean water and hygiene. Visitors received 'Jal Prasad' and educational materials, emphasizing the mission's success stories.


Challenges and the Way Forward

Despite these successes, challenges remain. Some areas still face issues with water supply due to infrastructural shortcomings and maintenance problems. Addressing these challenges requires continuous monitoring and community involvement to ensure the sustainability of the water supply systems.
