External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for the new chancery complex of the Indian High Commission in Singapore, describing the project as a reflection of a new phase in the India-Singapore Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan joined him for the ceremony. The new chancery and residential buildings will be constructed at Stevens Road, on the outskirts of the Central Business District.

Symbol of Expanding Bilateral Ties
Jaishankar stated that the complex would, in many ways, represent the bilateral relationship and serve as the face of India in Singapore. He expressed confidence that the facility would strengthen services for the Indian community. Balakrishnan observed that the new chancery reflects the growing depth of relations between the two countries. The architectural design draws inspiration from traditional Indian motifs, particularly those associated with Rajasthan, and materials such as marble will be sourced from India.
Ministerial Roundtable and Broader Engagements
Jaishankar is in Singapore to take part in the fourth India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable scheduled for Thursday. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, and Minister of State for Commerce and Industry and Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasada are also participating in the Indian delegation. Singapore’s side is being led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong.
A 70-member Indian business delegation is accompanying the ministers for related discussions under the India-Singapore Business Roundtable. The ministerial meeting is expected to review progress under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership roadmap and explore cooperation in areas including advanced manufacturing, digitalisation, connectivity, healthcare, skills development, sustainability, financial services and logistics. The previous roundtable was held in New Delhi in August 2025.
Economic and People-to-People Dimensions
India and Singapore elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2015. The partnership covers trade, investment, digitalisation, defence and security, education and emerging technologies. Singapore remains India’s largest trading partner within ASEAN and a major source of foreign direct investment. In the financial year 2025-26 it ranked as India’s top source of FDI, with inflows of USD 19.8 billion. Cumulative investment from Singapore between April 2000 and March 2026 stood at approximately USD 194.68 billion.
People of Indian origin constitute nine per cent of Singapore’s resident population. The Indian community includes professionals working in financial services, information technology, construction and marine sectors, as well as students. Tamil is one of Singapore’s four official languages.
Earlier on Wednesday, Jaishankar and Balakrishnan held detailed discussions on further strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and exchanged views on the current geopolitical situation.
The MGMM Outlook
The foundation stone ceremony for the new Indian chancery in Singapore marks another important step in the steadily expanding India-Singapore partnership. With External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan present, the new complex is set to become a prominent symbol of India’s growing diplomatic and community presence in Singapore. Its design, incorporating traditional Indian elements and materials sourced from India, also reflects the cultural dimension of the relationship.
The development comes alongside high-level discussions under the India-Singapore Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, covering areas such as advanced manufacturing, digitalisation, connectivity, healthcare, financial services, logistics and emerging technologies. With Singapore being a major investment partner and India’s largest trading partner in ASEAN, the engagement carries significant economic importance. The presence of a large Indian-origin community further strengthens the people-to-people connection, making the new chancery more than just a diplomatic facility—it represents the expanding scope and ambition of India-Singapore relations.
